The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of getting rid of the cupboards around my stove/canopy area and having open hanging for pots, utensils and spices etc.

Something like this. (Please, if you have any better images of this sort of concept, let me know where to look!!!)

If anyone has, or has had, this type of set up, what were the good and bad about it?

My Mum's friend had a big ol' enormous farmhouse kitchen with all the lovely copper saucepans hanging.

The two disadvantages I noticed were: a) if you unhooked them the wrong way the hook itself came off and hit you on the head and b) they got rather dusty. That greasy kitchen dust...

It looked beautiful though.

Prior to putting our new kitchen in, we had an old timber ladder to hang the pots and pans on, heaps easier to access them than the stupid corner cupboard I have now.
Our only issue was my boys are quite tall and were always moaning about hitting their head on them.

Well for me it was mostly disadvantages.

DH is over a foot taller than me so if the pots hang at a height where I can reach them, he donks his head on them. My pots and pans are mostly Le Creuset so although they look beautiful they are also extremely heavy so I found it quite hard to get them down anyway. We ended up not using the pot-hangy thing in the previous house due to these issues.

The utensils hung behind the stove. I would have to wash them at least once a week even if they hadn't been used because they gathered grease and dust so quickly.

My spices were in an open rack down the far end of the bench - so about 2-2.5m from the stove. They still managed to gather grease and dust so I'd have to go through the whole rack all the time with a soapy cloth to polish them, otherwise it just looked like my kitchen was generally dirty.

In the right kitchen, the open look can be lovely, but it does require much more upkeep than I'm willing to do. If there's one place in my house I want looking sparkly clean, it's the kitchen.

I wouldn't do it because of the dust/grease factor. Unless you have a minimum of pans and use them every few days they get gross. Even if they don't you need to clean what they are hanging off or it looks dirty IMO.
Also, I'm a bit of a minimalist and find it stressful looking at it. I appreciate that that is my problem though.

Height of pots wouldn't be a problem as they will be hanging against a wall, not in the middle of the room.

I wouldn't for the grease/dust factor. We have a couple which hang and I have to wash them thoroughly before use every time. They are pots that don't get used every day but even so, who uses every pot and every utensil every day.

Sure it looks nice but a PITA to keep clean IMO. We are about to knock down half our house for a major reno including the kitchen. Everything will be in cupboards.
