For example, in Pride and Prejudice I (and everyone else) wanted to be Elizabeth . . . but in reality, I'm afraid I'd be cast as Mary (her studious, tedious and morally pretentious sister).

Similarly, in the Narnia books, I wanted to be Lucy enthralled in this parallel world . . . but can see how I could end up being her older sister who negates her Narnian adventures as she 'grows up'.

So which heroine/protagonist did you want to be and which character in that book/movie is actually more like you?

I wanted to be Jane Eyre because I adored Mr Rochester but in all honesty he would have had me locked in his attic pronto.

I would have been Mrs Danvers in Rebecca without a doubt.

Ooh and I wanted to be Dorian Grey - no consequences for your behaviour...well until there are consequences.

Jo was the best character in Little Women and I think out of all of those girls I would have been her, no way I could be Amy, I am not vain, or Beth, I am not nice or sweet, and certainly not the insipid Meg.

Laurie was cool too.

When I was around 12 I desperately wanted to be Anne of Green Gables - but more in the telemovies* than the books because, frankly, the books were a little tedious.
* Not that atrocious fan fiction sequel to the sequel with Cameron Daddo, though.

And I never felt like I belonged in Little Women - while I admired Jo, I wasn't like her and the others just left me cold.

I loved the idea of being Anne of Green Gables (of course) but thought/hoped that I could at least have been one of her many friends at Redmond - Priscilla or Stella maybe. I definitely didn't want to be Diana - she was lousy at grammar and married Fred Wright!

I wanted to be Winnie in the Wonder Years but I wasn't cool enough and couldn't flip my hair like that.

And Wilhelmina in The Tillerman Saga by Cynthia Voigt.

I wanted to idetify with Jo but I'm probably more of a Meg. Jo was a little too insecure and Meg was realistic about what she wanted.

I wanted to be Ilse from the Emily series when it comes to LM Montgomery. And marry Teddy. But that would have messed things up for Emily.

I wanted to be Stacy in the babysitters club but unfortunately was more of a Mallory crossed with Kristy. (ie instead of being cool I was a nerdy bossyboots)

Or Nancy in Swallows and Amazons, although I suspect I'm more of a Susan *sigh*
