When not pregnant one of my favourite sandwiches is cream cheese, avocado, capers and smoked salmon in soft fluffy white bread.
I'm craving it but was thinking of toasting it to kill any possible listeria as I'm pregnant. Will toasting it make the smoked salmon taste like crap? Or is there any other way of cooking it so it's "safe" to eat but doesn't taste gross? This post has been edited by Sunnycat: 30/01/2013, 11:01 PM |

I'm not sure about toasting it, but I cook it in pasta with cream. The salmon is more just heated through at the end though, rather than cooked, but it tastes just fine. I don't know whether it would actually make it safer to eat though.

As long as it's heated right through (to steaming level) it should be safe - and most smoked salmon is pretty thinly sliced so this shouldn't be hard. It should therefore be ok as a filling in toasted cheese sandwiches (if all the cheese around it is melted it's hot enough), a topping on pizza, or in scrambled eggs (cooked till solid, not runny).
Obviously don't keep any leftovers etc. And if you're having it with cream cheese you should only eat it out of a freshly opened packet. Makes for some revolting food wastage. |

My favourite combo, too - when pregnant I substituted hot smoked salmon, which has been cooked. I was told that was fine, and it toasts nicely if you're still concerned. New addiction!

Ooooh maybe I should put it on a pizza with camembert! Can you heat up avocado?

Go for hot smoked salmon. Warmed up smoked salmon is gross, in my opinion - I've found it gets quite a fishy taste. I also very much dislike heated avocado.
