Hi there
Can someone please give me an indication of a fair hourly rate for babysitters these days? I have one DD aged 2.5. The babysitter I have in mind is 21, an assistant at DDs creche, so qualified with first aid etc. Is $20 an hour about right? I have asked her, but she seems a bit awkward about charging us, keeps saying she will do it for free. I don't feel right about that! THANKS |

When I was an unqualified child carer I got $14p/h,
Once qualified, started on $18p/h and get a raise every now and then. Within 12months working there I was getting $20 p/h. Seems fair |

Man I feel ripped. When I was a wee las, the going rate was $2.50 an hour. Child labour I tell you.
Interesting to read this thread though to see what we're in for in years to come. |

I have found that it is specific to location to a certain extent.
I have used babysitters in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and rural SA and the rates vary by at least $5 per hour. Perth and Sydney were $20-$25 per hr. Rural SA (for a young unqualified) $10-15. Adelaide and Melb around $17-20. |

DD1 is 19 and babysits children aged from 2 to 10 at the moment, for various families. She is paid $15 per hour. I think that is a fair rate.
