I'm desperate to get back down to Tasmania this year, but I need to find decently priced airfare and accommodation and I have the kids schooling to consider.
I was wondering how the travel to and in Tasmania is around Easter time? Is it as busy as Christmas? What is the weather like generally? Among (many) other things, I want to do the Strahan to Queenstown railway before they shut it down, as we didn't get to do it last time. I hope we get there in time. It's not as busy... and it will be less so this year as the school terms have changed in Tasmania so there will be less local tourists.
Welcome! Oh and if you go to Strahan make sure you take the 'red' boat Heritage Cruises, they are the local boys. (the 'white' boat is owned by Federal Hotels... the multimillion dollar gambling enterprise who are shutting the railway!) The Jet Boat is also GREAT! *the weather will be great or alternately there will be a huge storm - this is how Easter usually pans out! This post has been edited by countrymel: 06/02/2013, 07:59 AM |

That's just what I was hoping to hear Countrymel!
We took the Heritage Cruises boat when we came down in 2010 and I'll gladly praise them to the skies! They were actually recommended to us by the visitor centre worker in Strahan. We went in to enquire about the train ride and the cruises and she, noting we had 2 small children, recommended the cruise and the red boat has a playroom which was a BIG hit for our kids. Big hit for us too because it meant one of us could sit near the playroom and watch the kids while the other (moi!) could go out on deck and take photos! I'm so disappointed that they are looking like closing down the railway. We were waiting until our kids were old enough to appreciate it (and cope with the long ride), hence the rush now. |
