Just wondering if anyone has a Net Nanny program on their computer & IPAd. If so what is it called and does it work. My children are 8 & 4. I watch them while on the computer (usually only using mathletics/intrepica etc), but they occassionally google and also sometimes use youtube. They only seem to play games on the IPAD. They (well DD8), doesn't have her own email, uses ours and so far isn't interested in facebook etc, just worried as I can't have "eyes" on them the whle time.

Any advise?

I've used Net Nanny (that's what it's called) on the PC as a trial. The kids were pretty young and only using it when we were there so I didn't buy it. Although I probably should now they are getting older - even an innocent google search can return unexpected results.

Net Nanny blocks adult content, you can set PC usage times to limit the time spent playing games etc.
My favorite feature was the ability to monitor chat for key phrases. You can allow chat, and not have to monitor it yourself / intrude on their privacy.

The software tracks key phrases such as people trying to find out names etc, and will then either shut down the chat or email you a report including the conversation and you can take action remotely as necessary.

They don't support iOS yet as far as I know, although they are working on it.

If you know enough about your modem to change the DNS settings you can use Open DNS to control what types of websites any or all of your devices can visit. I use it to block the obvious (porn, gambling etc) and also to block YouTube when my kids have spent so much time on YouTube we are going to be shaped. There are a whole range of different categories you can block and it's really easy to use, plus it's free!

You can also change the settings on the ipad so they can only access age appropriate stuff. For example I think it is Allow everything; M+; 9+; 4+ etc. I have it set to different things on my kids ipods. Not sure if it works for the internet though or only things you download. I only realised because I wanted to put abc iview on my DD's ipod and it wouldn't let me. Couldn't work it out for ages until I realised it has adult content on there so it wouldn't let me download it until I changed the settings. They are in the settings app under restrictions
