So I haven't travelled much. I've only flown twice

I'm looking at flights from Melb-Bris and although the costs only wary by $10 or so, the flight times vary by up to 2 hours

What is with the huge difference? If they're travelling the to the same place why does it take almost 2 hours longer?

One flight says "Flight time: 3hr10m" and another says "Flight time: 1hr25m". With another couple in between.

I always assumed it's to do with traffic flow at the airport ie you can only really have a limited number taking off or landing at the one time. But, you can have a whole heap up in the air in holding patterns ready to come down. In effect, the flight time is not different but the length varies due to the time you are stuck up in the air in the holding pattern

The 3 hours 10 minutes is wrong. I expect that it ought to be 2 hours 10 minutes but the fact that you're flying into the past with Brisbane ( ) means whatever system addsthe extra hour. Qantas shows 2 hours 10 mins flight time on their booking system.

1h25m seems a short flight time? QF shows 1h30m for Sydney-Brisbane?

I'm with bebe12 - more than likely due to daylight savings not happening in Queensland.

Then it would be due to flying back in time to Qld.

One airline is giving you the actual flight time, one is giving you the adjusted time.

I was just looking at the 1hr 25m flight (anything to keep me out of the air as much as possible!) and although it says that is the 'total flight time' the departure is 9.40 and arrival 12.05

No, the arrival time is Brisbane time, so it would be 11.05 Melbourne time. It still seems very short - I can't see even QF adding an extra 30% slack onto their flight times, given that there is nowhere near that difference in the normal cruising speed of the planes.
