Nine News veteran Peter Hitchener is celebrating 40 years on air. No offense to Mr Hitchener but what makes him more desirable, believable, bankable than so many, many female journalists? I wonder how many women make 10 years on air let alone 40.

Well, he's simply been there since he got the job. Obviously at the time he got the job, way more men were hired than women. And he's managed to keep the job, most likely because he is so likeable. Also, he just 'belongs' now!

There are examples of women who have had just as long careers in the industry, Barbara Walters, Ita Buttrose etc.

What fresh hell is this?
But not nearly as many women, and they are far outweighed by the number of men who have decades of experience. I can't think of any veteran female newsreaders in Australia, although Anne Doyle, who was a newsreader on the Irish national broadcaster RTE notched up 33years of news reading before she retired.

None of them spent 40 years at the helm or on air. All them them are classic examples of people who got shafted in spite of being more than capable.
