We downloaded the app on my DH's htc and had success!

We were first timers and managed to find 3 or 4 caches :)

Have fun!

It's possible to do it with a topographic map and compass. It's a bit of fiddling around, and it's harder too, but lots of fun. IMHO it's much better for building your navigation skills, but if it's too hard then you're less likely to do it.
I love navigating by map and compass biggrin.gif

You can also do it with a basic GPS (really cheap nowadays if you can locate one - ebay?)
We used to do it years ago before there were smartphones or iPads!

Every GPS I've owned, even a particularly cheap one, had an option for either driving or walking, so no car required!
You would just need to charge it really well.

So much time, so little to say.
I really want to try this with my kids.

Is it basically just finding out coordinates of a cache, hiking there, and finding it?

Yep, there are GPS devices not intended for use in cars. I use a Garmin which is a few years old. One like this is much better than a car one for geocaching or hiking. Batteries last longer, more robust (water resistant/waterproof, droppable) and usually better maps. The screen is smaller and it's not a touch screen and I'm fine with that, but it bothers some people. You can buy them in hiking/outdoor shops like Mountain Designs or Paddy Pallin.

In love with Life....
I use both a Garmin GPS and the iPhone app. I find that the GPS is better to use when we are bushwalking, but the iPhone is better for when we are caching around town or while we are out for a drive. The advantage of the iPhone app is also that you can log the cache as being found as soon as you have been there, rather than having to log them later. (It can be tedious if you have found heaps in one day!).

Keep in mind that the GPS needs to have co-ordinates loaded in before you leave, however if the iPhone has signal, it can get co-ordinates for any cache.

Have fun! I love that geocaching always takes me to places I've never seen before and that the kids have fun with it too.
