Without going into the ins and outs of HOW she managed to get hold of my megafol tablets, would ingesting them harm a two year old?

I don't know that she actually swallowed any as she didn't have a lot of time in which to have climbed up to the shelf and opened the bottle. But she did have several chewed up in her mouth when I found her. I scraped what I could out and made her rinse the rest.

I am in China and have no idea who to call for poisons advice. Google is not yielding anything.

God I feel like sh*t.

How stressful for you! DD1 did something similar when she was a toddler. I know how upsetting it can be and how guilty it can make you feel.

On the upside, I doubt it would do much harm, as kids can also take folate tablets.

ETA-Do you know how many were left in the bottle? Can you work out how many you pulled out of her mouth? That may be the only way to know for sure how much she had.

I know that too much iron isn't good in children, but if you're sure she didn't take too much or you got most of it out of her mouth, maybe a trip to a doctor might help to ease your mind.

I found these links...
http://kidshealth.org/parent/medications/folic_acid.html
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/...me=FOLIC%20ACID

One says, if in doubt, ring the ER, but seems to imply it's not a dangerous drug for children.
I'd call the hospital if possible just to check.

Few... I just called the poisons advice line (peace of mind is worth the international call). It should be fine and the worst we might get is some mild gastro-like symptoms.

Thank you everyone.

Folate is water soluble so she should pee out any excess in the next day or so. Just make sure she drinks enough fluids to pee regularly.

Is folate the only nutrient in the tablets? No iron or anything else? If it just folate, I wouldn't stress too much. And hide them in a locked cupboard!

ETA Just saw your update. Sounds like good news.

It is most unlikely that she would have chewed and swallowed too many because they have a vile taste sick.gif
It is also unlikely that she will come to any harm. There is a possibility of folate toxicity but is usually when there is prolonged over dosing and if she appears to behaving normally I think she'll be fine but if she is showing any symptoms then it would be best to take her to your doctor.

Here is a link for you to check out.

That's what I thought. But she wasn't holding back. Thank goodness we have finally worked out rinse and spit at toothbrushing time.

Okay, vitamins are moving to aneven higher shelf. Sigh.

i moved my vitamins up high as well...and then started forgetting to take them. Out of sight, out of mind it seems for me.

Now I'm low on Vit D again and need to move them to where I can see them and WILL TAKE THEM...but where my 2yr old can't get her hands on them.

Thank goodness they weren't iron tablets as they can be toxic if taken by children.
