There's a ring on eBay I've been considering for my new wedding ring. It's very close to what I had in mind - white gold, with something a bit different to diamonds or a plain band. It's also inexpensive (listed at $169, with offers accepted).

The thing is, the stones in it have been described as 'blue diamonds'. I am very skeptical about that because, as I understand it, blue diamonds are rare and very expensive. I get the feeling the seller just sells a lot of second-hand things and isn't a jeweller, so may not actually know better. Personally, I don't mind what kind of stone they are, but I am curious as to what they may be. They look a little too light to be sapphires. Possibly blue topaz?

This is the listing. Anyone have any idea what they might be? The photos are a bit crap, so hard to see well.

My other question is: with a fairly obviously incorrect description, would you still buy the ring, if you didn't actually mind that they weren't diamonds? Do you think there's a chance other things are incorrect as well - such as it not actually being white gold?

Blue topaz are usually a much lighter colour than that. They look to me like the cheaper dark blue saphires. I'd be a bit suspicious about their claims personally.

they aren't dark though (have a look at the third photo in), but they don't jump out at me as blue topaz's either.

i really don't know OP, there are any number of stones that come in different colours, so without having the piece looked at by a gemologist it's hard to say

Aquamarine, Tourmaline or Beryl? Or maybe just blue cubic zerconias which are synthetic and I wouldn't be paying $169 for.... (couldn't look at the link on my work computer sorry.)

Corundum or Dark Blue Beryl perhaps.

Probably just a blue topaz, I've got one of these and the price seems about right. Basically you get what you pay for, if a blue diamond is so rare then it's got to cost much more than that.

They look like aquamarine to me.

It's a stunning ring. If I had the money, I'd be tempted! I say if you love it, and don't care what the gems are, go for it, why not?

I'd say sapphire.

If you google blue diamond there are such things are they are the same sort of colour. Definately not a blue topaz as I have one and it is quite different in colour.

Thanks for the suggestions! I hadn't thought of aquamarine or cubic zirconia.

I'm a bit wary of overpaying as well, but then I've seen plain white gold bands for as much (assuming that part is at least true!).

The seller has perfect feedback, so I would probably give the benefit of the doubt that they weren't trying to be completely dodgy, just kind of ignorant (although, you would think they might twig that blue diamonds are likely to be worth a hell of a lot more!).

At any rate, I'll have to go to a jeweller and get my proper ring size, because I suspect it may be too small, so could all be a moot point!
