Hi everyone
DS is 9 months today! Wow it went fast. Anyway I have pretty much stopped sterilizing his bottles. Is it too soon? He hasn't had a problem yet. Thanks... Regards, Kath ME 31 DH 32 DS 5.2.04 |

Hi again
Once Adam was crawling around, licking carpet, finding all sorts of fun object to stick in his mouth it seemed pointless to me sterilsing for him! So I definately don't think its too soon for you to stop. Maybe if one of you comes down with gastro or something along those lines sterilise his bottles until the bug has moved on, but I wouldn't be worried. Adam is fully breastfed but I was still sterilising his spoons and the odd bottle of EBM he was having at 6 months...it wasn't long after then that I stopped though. Jenny

Dirt is not the issue, it is the bacteria that is associated with milk. Well that is what I was told.
I sterilzed until DS was about 11 months and we moved house, it just stayed in the box!!! There has been a couple of threads about this in the past and you will get many different opinions. If it feels right do it Me; 33 DH; 34 DS; 1 (15/5/03) MC - 8/04 |

Yup I agree with Lachlan's mum - it's milk bugs not dirt you need to worry about. Especially if you are making up bottles in advance and storing in the fridge, you need to make sure the bottles are properly cleaned before use.
My DD is still BF and I just wash her bowls, spoons and water cup with our things but if I give her EBM or use the pump then I sterilise them after use. Steph DD Alex (March 04) |

I stopped sterilizing DS bottles when he turned 9 months. We just put everything through the dishwasher now.
My friend recently had a baby and the hospital she was at (in Perth) doesn't sterlize at all anymore, not even for newborns! Cheers Fee |

Well now for the horrible mum that has never sterilised anything- from birth.
With ds I did for about six months. With dd I never bothered- ds was sticking his fingers into her mouth and stealing her dummy- never did see the point. My babies were/are breastfed though so I am talking about dummies mostly, although I did comp dd with bottles for a month. (unsterilised, shock horror) Its a personal decision. Whatever you feel comfortable with. A good hot wash and rinse and air dry is plenty in my opinion. Love, MB. Mumma to Tom 33 weeks 1420 gms Mia 34 weeks 2460 gms |

i sterilised til i returned to work and then i just didn't have the time (I had an hour a day and needed to pump 3 times, sterilising and cooling it down enough to use takes a good 10 minutes...). plus, as the others have said, i figured that he was shoving all kinds of stuff in his mouth anyway.
