You're nobody until you're talked about
I've got a mate who has just hit her credit card and got her kids all the latest toys/gadgets for Christmas just so she has bragging rights over the other mums a school. Never mind how she is going to pay for it (she constantly whinges to me how she can't pay her bills now) but where's the meaning of xmas. Do others go into debt for xmas or just go without (that's me!).

I pay for everything via credit card, however my bill is paid off in full monthly.

If she is going into massive debt for the sake of one-up-manship then she isn't celebrating Christmas at all, she is just indulging her own consumerist greed. It's not what Christmas is about, not even a little.

I never go into debt...I will admit I spend more than I should but its "our" money to spend and not the banks!

Another cashie here, I mean we LOVE christmas but i would not get into debt for it!! what fun would that be stressing over credit card bills during the best time of year?!
I figure if you dont feel you will have the $$ come christmas time an easy solution is to go through your bank to get a christmas savings club account. or get chrisco or castle or one of the hamper packages! anything but a great big debt!
also ,for us buying christmas presents is about getting our kids what they are into, NOT about the one upmanship between other people! I think its terribly sad to use christmas as an excuse to outdo someone else!

I wouldn't do this, mainly because you never know what's going to happen. e.g hot water heater needs fixing, car needs fixing, dental problems etc.
I wouldn't go into debt for something I didn't need. Although in her case it sounds like her ego needs it.

I dont understand why people go into huge debts for Christmas.
Its not like its a huge shock to everyone - Christmas happens the same time every year.
Its not hard to save a few dollars every week/fortnight and put it into a christmas club account.
The last thing I would want is to be paying catch up on all my bills because I went crazy on the plastic buying presents.

Never get into debt over xmas, always plan ahead!

For my daughter and nieces and nephews i hit the toy sales in the middle of the year, if i dont have the cash to pay upfront i do a xmas layby and pay it off over the year.

For the adults (mum/dad, inlaws, and hubby) we just buy them gifts out of OUR money.

we dont buy for sisters/brothers and sil's or bil's, ends up too expensive. Plus the family is always growing and it just gets too much.

WD I think?

I think you'd be a an idiot.

But I avoid debt at all costs.. We have none except our low mortgage.

I never buy what i can't afford.

And we buy minimally at Xmas, because we aren't Xtians or consumerists.
