Yes, it is kind of a spin off, but it made me think.

When someone says they have been "married" (defacto or married) quite a while, or a long time what does that mean to you?

I suppose my first marriage was 6 years, I consider a 6 year marriage VERY short. DH and I have now been married nearly 12 years (living together for nearly 2 years before that) and then I would still not consider that a long marriage.

What do you consider to be a long marriage?

Just a minute, I'm combing my eyelashes!
I'd consider a long marriage to be over 20yrs.

15 is not LONG in my opinion but 20 is, 25 is and anything over of course.

Yeah, I'd say long is 20 years.

DH and I have been together 11 years & married 8, but it feels like we only met last month.

Ds1 - 10yrs and Ds2 - 9yrs
I would say around the 20-25yr mark I would start to say that was a long marriage/relationship.

Dh and I have been married 15yrs together for 18yrs and most of the time that doesn't feel like a long time...yet!

older than I feel
I'm with sceptical original.gif

My grandparents were married 65+ years - until death do us part.

In my extended family, there has only been 1 divorce, and that was after 30 years of marriage.

DH's family, on the other hand, have a strong family history of shorter marriages. The shortest, being just 3 1/2 months. The longest marriage, including his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins & parents, was 17 years for a first marriage and 20 for a second.

We are coming up to 14 years in November and in DH's family, are considered rare. sad.gif

especially when people say they have proved everyone wrong and their 2 year marriage is still going strong

Yes.

I also think it probably in my mind has something to do with where you are in life.

To me when your children are grown up and you are happily enjoying life with them gone and going on with their own lives, then it is a long marriage.

Well my grandparents were married almost 70 years when my grandpa died wub.gif . My parents have been married 41 yrs. So they are pretty much what I think of in regards to being married a long time.
