We're buying the kids beds with storage space underneath and trying to decide between trundles or drawers. I don't want both as they're going under windows and I don't want them that high. Which do you think would be more useful? I'm leaning towards drawers as we haven't started sleepovers yet and could probably just use a blow-up mattress when we do. WDYT?

We bought a trundle bed with a thin sheet of MDF in it instead of the mattress. Then it's just a big drawer. We found that most of the drawers on offer went only half-way across the bed and ended up quite small once all the drawer machinery was fitted in. So we now have a bed-sized drawer (a little less convenient to get out than smaller drawers) that holds heaps of stuff, and when we are ready for sleepovers, we can buy a mattress for it.

I like the above solution, a trundle that you buy the mattress to go on. Unless you are space poor and you can't find somewhere to put a rolled up foam mattress.

You cant fault having lots of storage for kids.

I'm getting one that has both for DS.

It has three drawers under a trundle so is not high. Best of both worlds imho.

I'll try and find a link for it, but I am sure others exist that are both.

Bel, like this?

trundle + drawers

I don't think that's too high for general safety but still too high with our window situation. sad.gif

Cakeys_mummy, what do you store on your trundle + MDF? I'm not sure I'd know how to maximize that space as we don't need it for toys and don't think it would work well for clothes...would it? huh.gif

DS (6) has all his lego stored on his trundle.

DD2 (2) has mainly toys in her trundle, although it did store outgrown clothes and blankets until recently.

OP, I don't store kids' clothes or toys in there. The toys wouldn't fit and the drawer is a bit unwieldy to open and close for clothes. I've filled it up with blankets, spare pillows etc, the kind of things that can take up useful shelf space elsewhere in the house but aren't needed all that often. You might get away with putting more frequently used stuff at the front of the drawer.

I got the trundle and drawers too. Like this one: http://www.fortywinks.com.au/alaska-bedroom-suite.html but in timber and it is only a touch higher than normal single beds.

My DD has the Ikea Hemnes Day Bed - trundle, drawers and not too high at all. Though you do have to store the mattress separately but we just have a foam one and roll it up in the spare room. The drawers are huge and the bed can be boy or girl depending on linen etc. I think they are about $499 looks much like the one above but half the price.
