I'll try to keep this short.
DD1 had positive skin prick tess for egg white, moulds, grassess. RAST blood tests also came back positive for CMP, though skin prick for this was negative. We have a family history of intolerances, no severe allergies. DD3 has been fully breastfed apart from 24hrs of formula on about Day 2 before I could express colostrum. She had a worsening facial rash which cleared up after I went dairy free at about2 months corrected age (she was 7 weeks prem). After I introduced soy milk for my calcium intake the rash came back, so I went soy free. She was still very fussy feeder at the breast (screaming/arching back/thrashing head) and sleeping very poorly. I trialled gluten-free and after about 10 days I felt like things were getting better. Saw my GP, who said that the amount of gluten getting to DD3 via breastmilk was insignificant and that she would have problems with weight gain if wheat was truly an issue. So I had a sandwich yesterday. Today, feeding is crap and she is inconsolable. I'm after opinions from those that have BTDT with their kids who have intolerances/allergies. Co-incidence? Did you have to go gluten free while exclusively breastfeeding? I'm tempted to keep myself gluten free, but it would (obviously!) be easier if I didn't have to. If you got this far - thanks for reading. V |

I don't have any experience with breastfeeding and cutting out gluten, but I have experience with cows milk and it certainly affected my milk.
I cut it out completely for DD1 when she was around 8 or 10 months old (it was over 15 years ago so I can't remember off the top of my head You could ask your Dr to refer you to a dietician - they should have more of an understanding than a GP. |

Thanks ZombieMum.
Yes, I have noticed that very small amounts of cow's milk in my diet get a reaction from DD3. I've pretty much decided at this stage to stay gluten free until I can get some more answers. I figure it can't hurt |

most recent info (pretty sure it was in teh latest coeliac mag, as well as being on various allergy sites) is that you should introduce gluten whilte breastfeeding, between 4-6months if there's any chance of CD. it lessens the chances. this is recommended over avoiding.

Thank you so much for this information brazen.
I have been gluten free for almost six weeks, and DD3 is now 4.5 months corrected age, so it sounds like a good time to re-introduce gluten, and see what happens. I appreciate the reply. V |
