I'm not Catholic but my husband is, and our children are being raised Catholic.

What is my 9 year old son supposed to wear to his first communion next week - white shirt and black suit pants?

What did your DS wear?

Thx

I think traditionally you are supposed to wear white.

When I made my first communion (which admittedly was 25 years ago!) all the girls wore white dresses and the boys wore a white suit.

The first communions I have been to lately and when I did mine when the boys wore suits. Black dress pants and white dress shirt with jacket and tie.

I went to one today and only 2 out of 14 kids were dressed especially for the occasion in white dresses. Everyone else just wore their nice but regular out-for-dinner or party clothes.

Has he had any lessons leading up to it? I think they told today's kids what they were allowed to wear (ie formal holy communion dress was not required).

Most girls wear a white communion dress in our school and the boys wear smart clothes, not necessarily a suit. Some schools do it in their uniforms. Is there anyone you can ask about the dress standard or check out what other boys will be wearing on the day?

He has had lessons but missed 2 as he was in hospital. I bought him a couple of nice collared shirts today, and black jeans but now I am worried everyone will be in white shirts. I can check at his final lesson on Wednesday.

Things have changed a lot since I made mine. Back then it was white dresses and the black suit pants and white shirts. These days it is a lot more casual and there is no set colour or style. Four of our boys have made theirs and I did dress them in casual long dress pants and a collared shirt. We were told that we were not expected to buy anything special.
As manlou4 commented, most of the other kids were not as dressed up. I think we saw a range from very, very casual, smart casual and perhaps one full suit.

Our parish priest told the kids they could wear anything they liked. The boys wore everything from three piece suits to jeans and a nice shirt. My girls wore new summer dresses (November communion) that became their christmas / party dress for the season.

Depends on the parish, but it can be a pretty formal event. Maybe check with the other mothers if thats possible.
