Hi
I am having lunch for 9 adults and 9 children for my DD 5th birthday this Sunday. I am either doing Lamb or marinated chicken on the BBQ with sausages. I usually do salads but as it is probably going to be cold any ideas on what I can serve with it? I am looking for food served hot or warmed

Baked vegetables? which ones?
Slices of some type like zucchini slice?
Any other ideas?

Thanks
Cath

bread warmed in the oven with a selection of flavoured butters

chargrilled capsicum cooked on the bbq

baked potatoes

stuffed tomatoes

and /or stuffed mushroom flats (not tiny fiddly ones)

or stuffed eggplant

wedges of baked pumpkin baked with spices (I can't believe I am even typing that suggestion knowing how much I loathe pumpkin - see marshmallow thread recently - but I know many others love it

You could maybe do a big dish of corn cobbettes but you'd have to use frozen at this time of year

large tray of cauliflower cheese? (prepare in advance, be generous with the cheese)

ummm... trying to think of other vegetables that are in season -

oh and a big dish of marinated spiced onion rings? (I do mine thickly sliced with lots of coarse black pepper, paprika, rosemary and olive oil)

Potato bake or some warm breads like a garlic bread? I will still probably do a salad too, even just a fairly basic green salad.

Definitely a potato bake or roast potatos and some cauliflower cheese - Yum!

Maybe a stuffed pumpkin - probably a butternut would be better for that...um...some peas and corn in a nice bowl...boring but always nice! Or some mint peas...maybe try googling for some winter vegie recipes I am sure there are heaps I just can't think of right now!!

It all sounds lovely though what you have planned!!

warmed bread rolls

fried rice (can premake and warm up?)

potato bake

those hot pasta sides (cheat and make those microwave ones ph34r.gif )

zucchini slice is always a hit amongst our friends

I once made a slice that was a sort of risotto type thing but firmer and held together with egg, I guess a cross between fritata and risotto, yum!!

Loving the PP suggestions, making me hungry!

Woolies has fresh corn all year round, as does Coles.
Gingered honey carrots(buy the fancy tiny Dutch carrots for that, looks good)
Potato bake
really nice bread warm from the oven.
Braised Leeks
Cauliflower cheese
Bean casserole( green beans, chopped bacon, almonds) type thing

Seasonal roast veggies. Onion, carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato, potato chopped and tossed in oil and in the oven covered until done (lid off at the end to crisp up a bit). I make a dressing with orange juice, some mustard, some vinegar and poppy seeds - pour that over when serving.

I also like to roast mushrooms and leeks - quarter mushrooms and toss in oil witha little salt and pepper, put in baking dish. Cut leeks into 3-4 cm lengths then split in half and lay them over the top and cover. The 'juice' oozes out of the mushies and steams the leeks which then brown on top. Give it a stir at the end before you serve - divine!

I'd stay away from anything salad or unseasonal - who wants to eat tomatoes this time of year? Or withered capsicum? Especially when the seasonal veggies are so delicious?

Do a mixed vegetable platter.

Cook baby potatoes, corn, carrot, beans, cauliflower and put them all in a large dish with some generous dollops of butter. You can use whatever vegies you like and it's colourful and tasty.
