Hi ladies

Thought I'd get some opinions/ideas here. DS is having his 6th birthday party next weekend and has a pirate theme. I don't really want to do lolly/loot bags as I'm not in favour of my own kids getting bags and bags of lollies. I was thinking of doing up some plain cupcakes and getting the kids to decorate their own as part of the activities and they can take them home with a balloon.

Do you think the kids would be disappointed with a cupcake to take home?

TIA

Anita

NO, I think they'd enjoy getting to make the cupcakes. An easier solution (and possibly easier to transport) is to decorate milk arrowroot biscuits. We did that for my son's fourth birthday party and it was a big success.

I'm not a big fan of lolly bags, either. I'd be happy with a cupcake and balloon (will it be helium?).

Or if you are after other ideas, can they make/decorate an eye patch, and take that home, and buy some cheap material and cut it up into pirate scarfs?

They may already have those things, but it is still fun to have more in the dress-up box.

Then print off a couple of pirate colouring in stensils and cut around the edges and roll them up like a teasure map.

Aldi does small packets of preservative free lollies with natural colour/flavour. I put one small packet in at our parties, and that is all that is edible. I figure it is reasonable for parents like me who don't like a lot of 'numbers' in their kid's food, but also stems potential disappointment from kids!

For my kids birthday party I did a lucky dip box. Kids loved it.

My sister did a lucky dip instead of lolly bags for her sons birthday party when he was about that age. She had 2 boxes, one with girls stuff and one with boys stuff (she told the kids that but let them pick from either, some girls wanted boys stuff but not a single boy wanted a girls one LOL).
Another time we made up a heap of 'treat bags' and filled them with a combination of party whistles, little notepads, parachute men, mini pencils/pens, mini erasers, mini slinkys, etc, all things from the cheap shop (they ahve awesome stuff in the party section), all the bags also had a couple of balloons and a lollypop.

I think the cupcake is a great idea too! Maybe a cupcake to decorate and then a balloon and a small lollypop or other treat as well, stickers or something that fits the theme of the party.

Oh, maybe they could decorate pirate hats! If you haven't already planned that, a hat and a cupcake they have decorated themselves would be plenty to take home.

At Ds1's party this year I got those bubble wand sticks for the kids. The ones at Woolworths in the toy section are $2 and quite nice. I think you can get similar in Big W for $1 ea.

ETA like these

I did tie on a little bag with a couple of lollies and a magic face towel thingie in it, and thank you tag on it too. I also had a few spares for the siblings that came along.

I should be cleaning my house
Whether it's right or wrong, I think kids will be disappointed just taking a cup cake home.

I didn't do lolly bags for DS party last year. I bought frisbees for $1 in various colors and they all got a frisbee with a Freddo taped to it.

I have done the cupcake thing it went own a treat I bought some cardboard single cupcake boxes for them to take their cake in

We have also decorated little pots then potted some cherry tomato seedlings and they took theirs home that also went down well and the kids loved telling me how yummy the tomatoes were after a couple of months

You could also get them to decorate treasure chests (small noodle type boxes) and do a treasure hunt for the treasure (small toys bubbles whistles eye patches gold chocolate coins pencils & notebooks etc)

Thanks for the input ladies, really appreciate the ideas.

I should've added in my OP that We've got an entertainer coming in who will supply all the prizes for all the games and treasure hunt. So they will get some sort of trinket. I might just supply some extra trinkets.

I'll get some helium balloons and that can be taken home along with a cupcake

I have done the cupcake home thing and some kids looked a little unsure but they were polite laughing2.gif I did throw a couple of extra little things in the bags. A pirate themed pencil and eraser could be cute. And stickers.
