I had a conversation with a friend on the weekend about washing hair (yes, we lead exciting lives). She was adamant that she could not go more than a day without shampooing her hair without buildup occurring.

I made reference to a study done by a guy who stopped washing his hair with shampoo altogether. The first two weeks were predictably and progressively greasy. But then his hair began to produce less oil and eventually he no longer had greasy buildup.

She would still not consider a reduction in shampooing.

Then I got to thinking about the lady garden. I don't shampoo it and it's, well wiry, but clean and free of buildup. How about you? Are you a shampooer or a rinser? Upstairs and downstairs?

You really should leave the lady garden alone and rinse with water alone because constant shampooing and soap products can interfere with the flora and make you susceptible to infections e.g. thrush and possibly urinary tract infections. It is ok for guys to shampoo because they don't have a gaping orifice that requires flora to maintain it.
In regards to the upstairs, I wash my hair every 3 to 4 days and can not go any longer because I feel icky and need that fully clean feeling.

Upstairs 2 to 3 days is needed, I sometimes take longer between depending on the boys and shower time.

Downstairs - no shampoo! A bit of my body wash if it's that time of the month, otherwise whatever drips down as I wash the rest, and a VERY thorough rinse.

I'm not a bad mum, I'm a good mum with low expectations
I just thought I would point out that when I had very short hair, as I imagine the guy in the study had, I never had to shampoo my hair, it just didn't get greasy. Now that I have nearly waist length hair I have to shampoo every day or it feels disgusting. I suspect it simply comes down to the fact that when your hair is short it just doesn't trap the oil whereas long hair does.

As to downstairs, I am with PP, leave it alone.

Not shampoo but soap like most people I imagine. Shampoo is pretty much detergent/soap so it's the same really.

or Fembo maybe...
Soap downstairs, as I categorise it as 'body' not 'hair' (dunno why)

I'm currently experimenting with reducing the frequency of shampooing upstairs, given the knowledge now that hair doesn't really need it. I leave it till it feels yucky and then shampoo, trying to stretch it out a bit each time. I think I've now gone from every 2nd day to say every 5th.
