I am not sure if there's a post about this already but I heard it announced on the radio today that Dairy Farmers are going to be getting 15c per litre for their grade 2 milk, which is approx. half of the pittance they were getting.

I know there are alot of you out there who care about this issue and it's rather horrified me.

They have somebody currently working out a price for grade 1 milk which will be released soon. It won't be good.

*howls* I'm a bit new to this issue, is there something you suggest consumers do to help (other than not buy milk retailing at $1 per litre, I assume)?

Seriously? How f*cking ridiculous. Just when I thought it was not possible for the milk price to get lower.

Next thing they will be asking the farmers to supply the milk AND pay dairy farmers for the priviledge.

I think you will find that the dairy companies are also struggling at the moment, the coles etc pricing is killing all

Apparently the Chinese company that buys all the milk and on sells it, lost it's contract with Woolies. This is what has instigated this massive reduction.

My pregnant brain can't remember the name of the companies of course. I'll scour for it. It was ABC radio.

Joey, I have no answers but it's a problem for us all.

Only a ginger can call a ginger a ginger!
So hang on, not only are they saying they'll pay less for the milk from now on, they're saying that for the milk they've already bought, the invoices of which they haven't paid, they're going to pay the lower price?! That's atrocious! As if anyone else could get away with doing that! Hang about Mr Plumber, I know when you unclogged my drain you gave me an invoice for x amount, but I only want to pay half so that's all you're getting. Not likely!

Why is our milk market shrinking?
Why didn't Dairy Farmers tell their members about the price offered two months ago (one month before the change took effect)?
How is this going to effect our food security?

So many questions - so little comprehensive reporting of the issue.

sanity is overrated
Woeful!
But what can consumers do?
I get my milk straight from the dairy when the cows are 'in' but not everybody wants or has that option! (currently buying my milk as the cows are still 'off')

The Preeclampsia police. Check your BP today!
It is awful and will lead to the further breakdown of our dairy industry.
I'm not sure what consumers can do. Most of the major milk brands are owned by this corporation.
Remember that, at the bottom of this chain are little dairy farmers who have little control or impact. I used to to work in a dairy area and dairy farmers lives have been gradually eaten away at since deregulation. sad.gif

I buy a mix of Aussie Farmers Direct and Maleny Dairies (my absolute favourite - gorgeous milk and sooooo creamy, as well as being a small family company).
