Girls, 14, seek fertility treatment, doctor says

London

Girls as young as 14 are seeking fertility treatment on Britain’s National Health Service because they have been unable to become pregnant after up to two years of sexual activity without contraception.

As one clinic in Swindon, four girls aged 14 were so desperate to have babies that they asked whether they could get in vitro fertilisation.

The requests, all in the past year, were made to Jo Heaton, who runs a sexual health clinic for under-19s.
“I found it absolutely extraordinary,” she said.

It is illegal in Britain for children under 16 to have sex but authorities rarely take action provided the acts are consensual and the participants are of similar ages.

Dr Heaton is convinced that scores of girls must be making similar requests all over the country.

All the girls who approached her were from working-class backgrounds. Each was concerned that she might not be able to conceive naturally.

“I found it hard to know what position to take,” Dr Heaton said.

“All I did say was that the only person who could help would be a gynaecologist but the chances of them being willing to assist in these circumstances was next to nothing.”

“The impression I got was that they had a low self-esteem and low aspirations. It was almost as if they felt there was nothing in life they could achieve except to get pregnant. Then they would have a baby they could love and who would, in turn, love them.”

Dr Heaton said that she understood the four girls to have partners of similar ages.

She said that although Government campaigns aimed to prevent pregnancies, politicians had to recognise that many teenagers desperately wanted to become pregnant.

“I have sometimes got up at conferences and said: ‘But what about those children who want to get pregnant?’ and there has been a deathly silence. It’s something people don’t really want to admit to.”

I dread to think what the parents of these girls are teaching them. I think it is incredibily sad that these girls have such low self-esteem that they feel a child is their only solution but by the same token surely allowing this to happen to tandamount to child abuse. Allowing a child that is still grow to grow another child - its just not right.

What is this world coming to.

Surely not!

Why on earth are 14yr olds having unprotected sex in the first place

And why on earth wouldn't they be waiting at least another 10 years before making a decision about fertility treatment!

.... honestly, what are the parents thinking

I am sure that any child of 14 who steps up and asks for help from the medical profession to fall pregnant, will be routed towards a counsellor before she can even spell IVF. There definitely is something very wrong with that picture.

OTT, what is a YMM?

Young Mothers Movement. And yes Karen is right. I remember not too long ago, getting bagged for saying that 15 was too young to be trying to fall pregnant, to someone that was 17 and pregnant after 2 years of ttcing.

What these teen mothers or really preteen mothers fail to realise, is that having a baby of your own is nothing like the babysitting they used to do. And boy do they get a wake up call 2 months or so after the birth of that soooo *had to* have baby. And they then acknowledge that those that tried to warn them that a baby at this age is not the way to go, but it's too late.

I seem more worried about the fact that 14 year olds have been TTC for 2 years! I know times have changed but 12 year olds having sex- boy-o-boy!!!!
Maybe Im an oldie!

Karen, in regards to your comments the other day, I dont think it was the 14 year olds that 'attacked' you, it was more like the ones my age (early 20's) that felt as if they were being treated as children. 14 is a child.
Ive had people give me funny looks etc, as I dont even look 24, but there's a huuuuge difference b/w 14 and 24.
Karen, I think the convo the other day started out talking about teen mums, but them some people started aiming it towards anyone under 30- just one huge misunderstanding!

I see it that at 14 your body hasnt finished growing. Wouldnt it cause health probs for the mum?

Where are these girls parents?

Oh, that is so sad.

Its bad enough when a teenager gets pg accidentally, but to
be throwiing their life away like that.

There are some really SH*T parents in this world who would
raise their children feeling no-one loves them and they need
a baby to fix that.

So sad.

Aqua, you can infer from the "trying for two years" that they
are 5% of the original number who started. (ie 400 12 year
olds trying) PLUS the ones who were too scared to tell the
doctor. Although I'd think that 12-14 year olds wouldn't be as
fertile as 15-20 year olds. Their hormones would still be
settling down, surely?

I just did some research - according to
www.nursing-standard.co.uk/ archives/ns/vol18-33/pdfs/
v18n33p3336.pdf
There are 8,000 births to mothers under 16, and 2,200 to
mothers under 14 in the UK.

Bloody hell. I would have just assumed they were almost all
accidents.

In Australia there were 3964 births to women under 17 (they
don't divide it up into the very young and just moderately
young. This is out of 253,053 mothers. (the average first time
mother age was 27.3). (source:NPSU)

I remember a friend of mine who worked at Ipswich Hospital telling me that some worried parents had brought in their 15 year old daughter to be checked out "because her sisters were all pregnant by now and she isn't!"

I agree that this is totally shocking and disturbing but at the same time the comments which have put the full blame on the parents is IMHO unfair.

Many loving, caring and truely great parents try very hard to instill into their children the correct values and to teach what is right in life but by 14 if that child doesn't want to listen there is not a hell of a lot that a parent can do about it.

I am VERY lucky that I didn't end up pregnant at 14. My parents tried their hearts out to keep me home and safe but there was nothing they could short of locking me up. They did actually try once!

Wow - as a current IVF attendee, I find this article disturbing, for a number of reasons. Mainly because I relate it to myself at 14 ( as we probably all have ) and at that age I was not sexually active and was still writing boys names on arms and school-books and school bags, still deciding which member of Duran Duran I liked best and agonising whether or not I should perm my hair like all the other girls....So I think we all relate differently as we have all had different experiences at that age in our many varied lives.

But I am disturbed by children actively seeking conception/pregnancy in their early teens in modern societies such as the UK - I thought that I read somewhere that the lack of sex education in the UK as compared to the more prolific teachings in our Australian schools had apparently led to a decrease in unmarried/single mothers under 17 in the UK? Has anyone else read that?

I agree that no matter how you much you instill certain values in your child it is possible that they will just go and do it anyway, but seeking treatment for infertility at fourteen, this is appalling in my opinion. And unprotected sex....I shudder to think of the consequences more life threatening than being a teen mother.

Oh that is wrong on so many levels.

I admit I used to crave a baby at that age, so I started babysitting!!!!!!!
