I should probably actually post something, now that I'm all signed up for the flickr group!

I'm Fee, and I'm from Canberra. Just got the one little girl, Ruby, who's 7 months. Always been a bit fascinated with photos, but have only just got myself a proper camera. I figured it was about time that I got into it properly! I don't know the first thing about SLR's, but I intend on learning! I've got a pretty good P&S, but in the last little while I've become a bit frustrated with it's limitations.

I too am finding the slow shutter speed a problem. I cant seem to get the right mix between the fast and slow.... generally opting for tooo slow and then everything is just a blurrrrrrrrr.

ok... off to research some more ideas for slow shutter speed.

Amanda - I answered your questin in the flickr group, and posted a link to the manual for your camera.

On the wheel where you found the S and A there is also an M... which is your Manual setting... then the link i left you shows you how to change the shutter speed and aperture... didnt read it but I think it was something to do with the up and down areas and the left and right arrows....

Help needed here, have our 2nd wedding anniversary fast approaching, and traditionally the gift should be cotton, modern is china.
How can I use this to my advantage and get something camera related? Cotton and china do not give me much to work with do they? Any ideas would be great, don't want to miss out on a gift opportunity!

Had fun with this weeks challenge, it was hard and I must have taken 200 photos as I had trouble with picture too bright, picture too dark, too fast too slow etc. Got a few I was happy with so it was all worth it.
Tempted to pull out my P&S digital and have a go on it to see what it does as well.... Might be going too far there!

Yes PLEASE leave CC where you can!! It does make a big difference to get a good or not so good response when it comes to finding what works.

Could you get something MADE in China

just a quick question, how many photos do you guys take to get a few good ones???? i took about 200 of my friends newborn and only got 20 that i really liked, how on earth do you take less pics but still get the good ones.

i know it is ok with digital and you can delete but sureley there must be a better way without the millions it takes to get the few good ones!!

I got for my birthday yesterday a canon 50mm f1.8 lense and already I am in love with it It takes a much better photo, I just need to get then lighting right and also I would love the pics to look a little sharper.

Went out to practice some shots with different shutter speeds. If you want a laugh check out my flickr, didn't work very well but got some other good shots (I think )

I am doing my first "shoot" with someone elses kids today. Got my perspex, black backdrop, white sheet (may attempt to use as reflector but have no idea what i am doing), fully charged battery, camera (dug) and tripod.......oh and I am on about 3 hours sleep (smoke detectors, then restless baby, enough said), I have to take both kids with me and it's gonna be a stinker of a day.....all in all I am just NOT "feelin it" so please please wish me luck and send some phojo vives so I get some photo mojo.

How many of you are still using your kit lenses with your 400D?

I use the kit 18-55 (or whatever it is) but got the USM version of the 75-300. I also have a 28-80 which was the kit lens from my EOS 35mm camera from 9 years ago. I am trying to save up some money to get better lenses, but of course I am thinking luxury, so it will be a long slow process. I might ask for a 50mm lens for my birthday in june.

My f1.8 50mm pretty much stays on my camera these days, but I did use the 2 kit lens on the weekend for the challenge. I enjoyed having the versatility of a zoom again!!

the zoom lens keeps fighting with me I really have to get the kit lens out and try to use them. I mainly use my 50mm.

Peahen how did you go?

crap crap crap, stunning babies, stunning poses but I could not find anywhere with decent lighting so I have muddy pics. I just did your standard boring ol' perspex shots on black backdrop. It was so windy I needed somehting to help hold the backdrop down so I didn't bother taking the perspex away at all.

Oh and I had my camera on the wrong WB setting and forgot to change one of the other settings from the other day (colour setting, there are two sRGB choices.....one gives brigher colours which I didn't want with babies and thier pink skin). Oh and all the babies had very pink cheeks from our picnic yesterday (bit too much sun.....in the shade, go figure).

I am not looking forward to processing them, I had a quick peek and a play with one of them and they are gonna take alot of work due to the crappy lighting, wrong WB, baby pink skintones and a photographer with NO PHOJO.

I need a Beer, Will be cracking a Millars as soon as the kids are in bed.

Oh Karina - knowing you and how you are your own worst critic, I bet they will come up fabbo!

O.K, so after weeks of stuffing around and umming and ahhing about what I was going to get, I have just ordered a 400D and a tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens... yayyyyy, I can't wait to get it now. It probably won't be for a couple of weeks as frigging postage to my town is slow as can be, but it's done.

I did think about waiting till the 450D came out, supposedly next month, but I figure I will upgrade the camera eventually anyway, so the 400D is more than great anyway.

I can't wait to get out of the lurkers corner and start chatting and joining in the challenges

I got out with the camera on the weekend and had alot of fun. Managed to get some great pics of friends dd & ds (on flickr) and am currently editing some more of my 2.

I have my flash course tonight and looking forward to that.

Spunky: LOL, I have not even had a good look yet and dunno when I will get to. Got alot on today, cooking and baking Wheat, Dairy and Egg free treats for my little King.

I fixed the light meter prob I was having last night. Would appear I had accidentally set my camera to over compensate for exposure. I wish I had have fixed it yesterday morning so I didn't have to guess during yesterdays shoot

Peahan, bullets are my favourite!! Have you tried dark chocolate with raspberry ones?? DH often picks them up at the airport chocolate shops for me, when he goes on work trips!

Okay, so, complete newbie here.. what's the go with the 50mm f1.8 lens? what does it do? I just have the kit lenses that came with my 400d (only had it a week!), and I like the ummmmmm, small (!!!) one.. mostly cos I can get up a lot closer to my DD than I could with my P&S.

Also, can anyone recommend a good book, or magazine for learning the basics?

fee: I am not a fav of the raspberry bullets but you won my heart with the dark choc. The 50mm f/1.8 will allow you to open up your apperture more and achieve faster shutter speeds than the average 18-55mm kit lens. I am waiting for my 50mm to be delivered rather impatiently.

Onto that wine I was talking about earlier now, a nice $20 Pinot. I have had a poo of a day TBH. Along with a few minor things that got my goat I broke another one of my fav wine glasses (before I even had a drop) not only losing one of my fav wine glasses but making a nice mess I had to clean up right at the same time I was meant to be serving dinner. I am talking full sweet and vacume (crawling baby here). Then jut now I am not far off finishing a crochet baby blanket for someone and I am looking for my Crochet Stitch Bible that hubby got me for one of my B'day, complete with a loving message inside", and it has fallen behind he TV unit ripping the back away from the spine. Now I really treasure that book and wanted to keep it perfect to hand down to my daughter one day. May sound silly and trivial but I am really upset about it.

Spose I am extra grumpy cos I have been in the kitchen ALL arvo cooking meals for my son and then dinner for us and I HATE cooking.......I may as well have spent all arvo inserting long splinters under my fingernails. Anyway. Sorry to vent in here. Not very productive of me huh. I would go and unleash some of my anger on some much needed photo processing/editing but hubby is on the main pooter of course. So back to my wine and crochet with my broken book.
