My next door neighbor has two dogs a blue cattle dog and a Bull Arab, tonight she came asd asked me to have at look in the bull arabs ears as she had something in them.

Now this dog is really really strong and not yet one so trying to look properly was a challenge to say the least laughing2.gif

So I was horrified to find many ticks in her ears, very bloated and very deep in her ears. I then checked the cattle dog and he had two in his ear and that was it.

We called vets in the area to find out about having them removed while under sedation as the bull arab was going to be sooooooooo hard to get the ticks out.

We were quoted from 4 vets $300 - $3000 for both Dogs. ohmy.gif Plus $450 for the anti tick stuff per dog.

One vet told us that they were not paralysis ticks as all were engorged and both dogs were highly active, eating, and showed no signs of tick poisoning. When I described them he said they were bush ticks and common brown ticks.

So I had a massive panick attack and came home and checked Jarrah out (she has a tick collar). It was so hard to be throughough with her as she has a double coat and LOTS of fur. Her ears are clean and clear so I then ran my hands over every inch of her.
Thankfully she did not have one.

I am so paranoid now that she will get ticks, despite her collar. She has sentinal Tabs once a month to control heart worm and intestinal worm and fleas. Because of this she can;t take tick pills as well thus the collar.

Damn ticks I am so worried now.

Oh Neighbour managed to get all ticks from both dogs with the help of her 4 sons and liver treats. I am going to buy her tick collars tomorrow for her dogs (she does not drive)

We live in a high tick area (brown and bush mostly) and I found advantix was the best for putting a stop to the little buggers - it repels and kills (nothing is 100% though so a daily check is still required)

I had no luck with frontline it is supposed to kill them but it didn't.

Not sure if it can be used with the sentinel though maybe give your vet a call and see if they can be used at same time?

The advantix is a spot on treatment which also repels mozzies, fleas and some flies.

I can;t use a spot treatment as it has to make contack with skin, and as this is very very hard to manager with a husky the vet said not to do it, and advised me on the sentinal and a tick collar. I am just so worried about loosing Jarrah, I will be super vigilant now with her.

Even with the advantix I used to do a daily check - nothing is 100% guaranteed.

Not sure if your vet told you but when you do your check - also give a good check to the ears, pawpads/in between toes, base of the tail, under the arm and legs etc I guess any soft places where they can attach easily.

It is not fun for you or your dog (especially a nice fluffy husky!!) I am sure but if your neighbour's dog had them it is probably better to be vigilant.

After a while you will be able to feel for them efficiently which helps when it is hard to see with thick fur.
