How you you protect your dog against heartworm? We used to use the daily tablets which were cheap but a pain so this time we want to use at least the monthly/6 wk tablets. I heard about the yearly vaccination but read some negative reports about it so am happy to just do the tablets.
Any recommendations, looking for the cheapest brand and perhaps an online shop that sells them discount.
thanks!

I use Sentinel Spectrum on my two dogs, once a month and it also covers fleas and intestinal worms too. Never had any issue with it and no fleas or worms etc either.

Another Sentinel user here.
It was one of the brands I found out was safe for Shelties. Some breeds of dogs can have a sensitivity to ivermectin which is in a lot of the Heartworm medications. Though this sensitivity it is more the Collie related breeds.

OK thanks for that, 3 votes for Sentinel! Any recommendations for online pet supply shops (i.e. the cheapest price!)?

I usually order online with Vet Products Direct or VetnPet Direct depending on who is cheaper or if I have any free postage codes or loyalty points etc.

I just got the injection done for my dog. Like you I had heard negatives about it but I had a good talk to the vet who told me that he has done at least 5 injections of heartworm a day and has never seen a reaction in a dog. I will say what I read negatives I mean seemed to come from the US. My dog seems quite fine after the injection.

I too use Sentinel. I normally buy it from the vets but will check out a couple of online sites mentioned.

We've been doing the injections for 9 years, without any problems. Cannot remember what chews/tabs we gave the dogs when they were pups....

Thanks for replies everyone. As a result of looking around for all the products and talking with our vet, we have decided on Interceptor Spectrum for heartworm and all the intestinial worms roundworm, whipworm, hookworm and tapeworm, and Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks. I need the tick protection so that's why I didn't use Sentinel because I am going with Frontline anyway for the ticks and it does fleas very well, so I didn't want to double up on the flea treatment. Hopefully we're all covered now!
I ended up getting the best product price/postage deal at www.petcareshop.com.au.
Just posting in case anyone else is doing the runaround to find these things out.
