We have a new staffy puppy but when he's sleeping he just farts and farts and farts and they are rank! Could it be from what I am feeding him or could it be something more sinister? It's not just one or two either it seems to be at least 1 every 20-30 seconds and they stink!

First time I've ever owned a dog so I am on new territory here. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When we picked him up the owners gave us some food for him which is what he's used to having, I've just continued with the same stuff.

First off what is he eating and what did his breeder have him on? Changing diets too quickly in a puppy could cause bad wind as the pup adjusts.

She just had him on puppy milk and puppy tin food, she also gave me a sachet of purina puppy dry food.

He's off to the vet for his vaccination tomorrow, I will be asking the vet about what food is best for him. As I said I'm new to the puppy/dog thing and want to do what is best for him.

His gas is just horrible!

ETA - His poos haven't changed since we got him, they are solid. Could he have worms, can that cause the farts? He's being wormed tomorrow well and I wormed the kids and myself today.

I know you mentioned purina, but does he have pal at all?

That stuff is pure evil! I swear it could pass for biological warfare...

Hope the vet can give you some answers.

Lose the puppy milk, quick! He's lactose intolerant - as are so many animals - which accounts for the smell of death. Also switch to kibble. Tinned food is also notorious as its full of filler, not nutrition. The carbs are great for the stinky bacteria, and not much else.

Move to the best quality puppy food you can find - ask your vet for a recommendation (Hills, IAMS, etc). It will reduce the poop and the stench along with it.

Welcome to the world of Staffie's, they are famous for the way they can fart, burp and snore, oh and dont forget grunt original.gif

I would be more worried if your staffy did not do those things, our boy can clear a room in 2 secs flat but we wouldnt swap him for the world biggrin.gif

SBT's or Staffordshire Bull Terriers are notoriously bad farters (and chewers so make sure he isnt chewing any yucky planst outside)

Lose the puppy milk and tinned food (tinned food is the Maccas of dog food in terms of nutrition)

When you go to the vet tomorrow they will probably recommend what they sell (most seem to sell Hills or Advance) both these dog foods are good. They may seem expensive but you feed less. For example it may be one cup of the Hills compared to 2 cups of Supercoat (from Woolies) so whilst it seems cheaper you are actually using more. Plus the when you compare the ingredients in a supermarket brand compared to a vet/pet food place brand they are much better. A "premium vet brand" usually means less smell, better digestion (less farts) and smaller, firmer poos (important in this house since I seem to be on yard duty LOL)
also buy some raw chicken necks as they are great for little puppies and as he grows move to chicken wings/frames biggrin.gif

Dont forget to book into puppy preschool whilst you are there - you are going to have a strong little dog on your hands soon biggrin.gif and get some nice chew toys to help him through his teething stage.

Good luck

You can try a dessert spoon of natural yoghurt in their breakfast, works a treat original.gif

Also, try a Bones and Raw Food (BARF) diet over the tinned stuff. It's cheaper (and better) than the tinned crap!

My sisters staffy can fart you out of the house....she uses charcol biscuits...but i think your pup migh need a change in diet...as PP have stated. try Eukanuba...our dogs love this

Thankyou so much for all your help and advice girls!

He is now on Royal Canin dog food which yes is very expensive but think it will be well worth it in the end. At this stage for his weight he is only having half a cup a day, which will progress as he gets bigger.

I'm happy to spend the $$$ if it means my dog is healthy and nutritionally satisfied, haven't been to the vet yet thats this afternoon, but happened to find a pet warehouse place close to home, they were very helpful.

I will post some pics of my baby for you to see, he is the love of my life atm! Asleep on my shoulder right now as I post this!

I agree 100% with this. I have a staffy x and she gets the farts as well (and burps). And they are awful sick.gif

Please share on the piccies, I love staffies biggrin.gif

Our Labrador does the stinkiest farts especially when we feed her Chum (wet and dry food) or any dry food.
*Spikey*
No wonder. Chum is pretty much all filler - which just go straight through the gut, after fermenting. sick.gif

I'd suggest moving your lab onto a high quality kibble, my lab is on Hills (JD) and she doesn't fart much, its not chemical or biological warfare level when she does, and she doesn't do huge dumps - plus the bag of food lasts about 3 times longer than the cheap stuff, so its great value.
