Hi,
A bit of backgourne....
My DD (9mths) has recently started vomiting after breastfeeds, has only put on 200g in the past two months & does not eat alot of solids.

We had a MCHN apt last thursday and they said to see what happens over the next month and go from there. Well I ended up taking her to the dr on friday as she startd vomiting and was grumpy all day/night. DH has alot of allergies and our GP suggested to try her on soy milk in cereal & soy yoghurt which I have done.

She is not the best sleeper, still wakes every 2/3hrs round the clock.
Yesterday she was sick after every meal & last night was the same, we gave her soy yoghurt about 11pm and she ate heaps of it and then slept for the next 7hrs! She does have a cold at the moment also but this morning was again sick after her BF.
I went to the chemist as the Dr's are shut today and he suggested Karicare thickener until I get into the Dr again (hopefully tomorrow). I am going to ask for a referral to a paed as I am sure there is something wrong (mummy instinct).

So, after all that, I am just wondering what made you think there was an issue with your child and how did you go about diagnosis?

Thanks
BabyOne
Hi Tammy

I didn't suspect anything was wrong until I gave him his first dairy(a tbsp of normal yoghurt) at about 9.5 months and he developed hives all over his face and then spent the afternoon vomiting. The only thing before that was that I noticed he would retch after a breastfeed if I had eaten egg. He also vomited but so did baby #1 so I didn't worry.

He was tested a few days after the yoghurt and was ana to egg and allergic to peanut and milk too. But, lots of things were pointed out to me after that including his slow weight gain that I had not noticed because he was baby #2 I wasn't weighing all the time like the 1st. Sometimes he would scream and cry for no apparent reason but was clearly in pain...most likely something I ate that annoyed him. The allergy clinic were very surprised that he was not an awful sleeper.

We were all tested and turned out my DH has a severe dustmite allergy so he has the allergy gene. High chance of allergies if one of you have them.

Did she have milk before soy? Just as likely to react to soy so could be that causing the problem if it only got worse when you gave the soy.

I was very lucky to get into RPA allergy clinic the day after he reacted but i called them and then went looking for the referral.

Good luck and hope it turns out to be nothing original.gif

DS started breaking out in eczema, which got increasingly more severe until he was covered head to toe. He kept getting recurrent skin infections because I could not control it.

He would vomit fairly frequently after a BF, was a shocking sleeper and would get bouts of mucousy dirrahoea. I was in and out of GPs offices for a couple of months until after one BF he broke out in hives all around his mouth, face, neck, torso and arms. Then I finally got the referral to the paed allergist and DS was diagnosed with allergies to 5 foods at 6m of age.

So, I would be asking for a referral to a paed allergist if you suspect allergy or intolerance. If your GP does not know of anyone, you can find a list of specialists in your state on this link here The waiting list (public and private) for paed allergists can be quite horrendous, so there is nothing wrong with getting a referral to a paed allergist and a general paed as well. You can seek the advice of the general paed while you are waiting and see what they have to say.

It is important to know that allergens pass through breast milk. If you are still feeding your DD and suspect a problem with cow's milk, you will need to go on a dairy free diet yourself.

I gave my DD egg (scrambled eggs) for the first time at age 12 months, and she vomited it all back up within an hour. Took her to the GP who referred us to an allergy specialist.
The specialist performed a skin prick test (Tiny needle prick administering a miniscule amount of the allergen to the skin) and it showed she is moderately allergic to egg.
She is due to go back at age 2, next year, to re-test, as they often grow out of allergies as they get older.

My answer is probably not too helpful, as my DS food reaction was in the form of a rash over the sides of his face, above and below his ears. It came up super fast when eating the foods that caused it (a variety of fruits) and disappeared in a couple of hours at worst, about 15minutes for the milder reactions. Thankfully it never reached the point of causing swelling or breathing difficulties and he has grown out of it around 2 months ago.

(Before some bright spark does the math on that 2 months and my forum sig: yes the reactions were between 4 and 6 months of age, he started solids early on Dr advice and I've been told he would have had those initial couple of months of reaction no matter what age I started him on, possibly longer if we'd left it much later).

Turns out it was a reaction to vitamin C (which is added to many fruit puree baby food such as apple and pear, and was also present in mango and kiwifruit we fed him fresh but the reaction was much milder). My little brother had the same thing happen when he was a child.

After a number of reactions we finally got a referral to a peadiatrician, and sent off for RAST blood tests which was not fun let me tell you.

Hope you find some answers soon

I suspected egg first - DS face used to go quite red - the worst reaction was pavlova. He also had eczema that I could not control anymore. I went to a GP to get a referral who was reluctant to refer me based on what I had told her. I insisted and finally got a referral for a date that was 14 months later. A scraping of peanut butter (just the remains on a knife that I used to make DS a sandwich) and one ambulance ride later we were moved well up the list - 3 weeks later we were in.

I had no idea about the peanut allergy - it came as a very scary shock. If you suspect an allergy you are probably right - get to your GP now and get a referral - insist on one.

After skin test - DS is allergic to peanuts and egg !

Thanks for your replies, we had our first paed. apt today & he suggested that both DD & I (as I am still BF) go off dairy and DD also had to have a blood test for Coeliac disease sad.gif

DH has many allergies and we are lucky that DS does not have any that we have come across as yet.

Hi, I too was going to suggest you cut dairy from your diet:)

I have a couple of kids with intolerance (thankfully no full blown allergies that we know of)

DD2 is intolerant to lactose. I took her to an allergist as she was constantly stuffed up in her sinuses, her bowel motions were foul, she had constant wind, her eyes always had purple shadowing under them (they can be known as allergic shiners) she is extremely pale. Changed her to lactose free milk & her eyes cleared up, her stuffiness was still pretty bad, she is now on nasonex for that, her bowel motions became formed, for the first time ever, she now has minimal wind. Another change we noticed once she was changed to lactose free is she stopped wetting the bed at night, she could wet the bed up to six times in one night! Within 48 hours of being lactose free, she stopped wetting the bed & has never wet the bed since.

DS3 has a dairy intolerance of some description (have yet to take him to an allergist) he is almost 1yo & still BF, I stopped all dairy in both our diets around 7mths ago now, due to his constantly being stuffy, snoring like a freight train, he was constantly pulling at his hair, rubbing his eyes & face and just basically miserable in the extreme, all the time sad.gif Dairy free & no runny nose, no snoring & he is so much happier now. The change is amazing! he also seems to resct to banana? Every time he has had banana he has vomited within an hour or so & is unsettled & wakeful, cries a lot...I'm assuming it upsets his tummy??

We also have salicylate, amine, synthetic antioxidant intolerance's within our home & the main reaction with these intolerance's is revolting behaviour, with DS2 you can almost count him down when hes had the synthetic antioxidants, he reacts that quickly, it's like Jekyll & Hyde.

Thanks mummypig, I am struggling with the no diary thing and today is only day 3! I love my dairy sad.gif

I have noticed though that DD is much happier yesterday and today, sleeping better & eating better (but I have also cut down on her number of BF's per day & stopped feeding her overnight).

She is also not scratching at her face as much so maybe she does have something going on, I guess it would be dairy rather than lactose???
Now I just hope that it is not Coeliac's & she starts gaining weight again.

the telling factor with us was the screaming and the minimal weight gain (i mean 40-60g was the norm for us). ds2 would scream and scream and not sleep from about 2 weeks of age. i noticed it was much worse after i had a bit of a dairy fest because i was feeling crappy (am talking lots of ice-cream and milk). he basically was miserable and stayed up 16 hours straight after that one. so i went off dairy and it got a bit better but he was still a very unhappy baby. i did notice a good difference after 2 weeks as apparently it takes 2 weeks for the milk protein to leave your milk. the soy protein issue took a lot longer to figure out and only happened after i topped him up with soy formula because all the stress had made my milk supply drop. well one foul poo later and full on screaming session and i realised what was going on. he has also always had very mucousy poos. he also reacts to goat's milk products. he was also getting bouts of excema on his chest from the soy

since going soy and dairy free he is a much happier baby. sleeping is still bad but he had also dropped off the graph weight wise and is now making up for that. he is also topped up with neocate though as my supply isn't enough for him to gain the weight. we also see a pead regularly now, though it took me8 gp visits before i got the referal and then only because it was my gp who had been away. we also see a pead deitician because of his weight issues. i am going to ask the pead about a referral to get him tested for allergies next time i see her.

good luck with the diet, once you get used to it, it isn't too bad, i found eliminating soy from my diet much harder the milk as soy is almost everything on the supermarket shelves

yes I agree maya, soy is in just about everything. Luckily she seems to be ok on soy (have not tried any formula's though).

DH has alot of allergies and at the moment is on an elimination diet of no wheat/gluten, soy, eggs, dairy, nuts, seafood/shellfish I dont know how he is doing it! I cook all his meals but the rest of us dont eat everything he does only the main meal if he is home.

With Noah he never put on weight well so the idiot MCHN told me to supplement his BF with formula-he still didn't gain great amounts of weight and was constantly sick with chest infections.
Then when he was about 11 months he reacted badly and had hives, swelling and noisy breathing-it turns out he is allergic to CMP. By the time they worked it out he was 1 so I put him on soy milk and haven't looked back-he can tolerate milk in cakes and biscuits, cheese but not butter or it straight. Depending on the amount he has it can be diarrhoea through to the hives.

Ds2 was always gassy with tummy pains and reflux. Then about a month ago started getting really foul smelling poo with mucous in it-they tested it said lactose intolerant but as DS1 has the CMP allergy I have been told to put him on neocate which he is starting today. I did try to continue to BF but yeah I don't want Sam to have happen to him what happened to Noah.

We also have a history of asthma and eczema in our families so yeah and I suffer from all kinds of irritations to my skin and nose so I guess it is just a thing that was bound to happen.

Just wanted to thank everyone for your replies & update, DD's blood test results came back clear to Coeliac's thankfully but an intollerance to something.

Since being on soy she has been a much happier baby, not constipated, sleeping better, not sure on the weight gain as I only had her weighed last week.
One day last week I accidentally ate something with dairy in it and that afternoon and the next day she was grumpy again sad.gif So there is definatley a reaction to CMP.

I spoke to the paed last week again after the reaction and he has suggested Pepti Junior forumla if I do decide to wean her.
