Friends of the family recently had an engagement party with a wishing well with some spiel on the invite about the present not being tax deductible (poor taste, much?) of which they bragged afterward about how much they raked in from having the party (parents paid for food, guests paid for drinks so they didn't spend a thing).
Fast forward and my brother receives a text message inviting him and his girlfriend to their christmas BBQ this weekend. "Cost is $ 12.50 per head to go towards meat and "the like", please bring a salad, own drinks and a chair". Seriously, $ 12.50? What is with the 50 cents? laugh.gif
Anyway, our other friend came over and we ask if he received a text inviting him to the BBQ... and he did... at a cost of $ 5 per head! wacko.gif He showed us the text and it was like it was copied, but they altered the fee per head.

Would you say anything?

Thankfully we didn't get invited. We aren't particularly close with them and didn't invite them to our wedding.

I would go and say oh i got a message that said cost was optional or bring my own meat with me. that is a bit dodgy asking for different contributions from people. it sounds like they are trying to make money off everyone else instead of paying for the get together.

It's so hilarious. We can't stop laughing about it.
I wonder what the 50 cents is for?!

Maybe 50c worth of mayo on the coleslaw. What absolute tools. rolleyes.gif
~Nodnol~
SMS back you have an appearance fee of $13.25 biggrin.gif
bridgeta
OMG! That's freakin hilarious! And soooo tight!

I'd reply saying "We've got some meat in the freezer, we'll just bring our own, thanks original.gif"
sparassidae
I reckon 50c is for your sauce. wink.gif

That is seriously funny.

I don't think I'd bother saying anything. I'd just rsvp that I would not be attending.

Frankly, I am surprised they have enough friends to actually constitute a party.
ekbaby
That is hilarious!

People never cease to amaze hey!! Maybe the 50c is to cover GST!! original.gif

I remember in high school some kids would charge for BBQs and get togethers. Fair enough, because most 16 year olds don't have the money to fund a reasonably sized social event (unless you're Justin Bieber and you made millions from singing like a 10 year old girl). But as we grew older most people understand that host duties include feeding your guests at your expense.

This is hilarious. I didn't realise throwing parties could be profitable.

I forgot to mention that my brother stupidly messaged "is the BBQ still on"?

- to which they replied "Cancelled. No-one is free on Sunday".

lol no one is free. I think I would have been busy to.

I must admit to asking people to bring a plate of food to the odd party. But if its at a meal time like lunch or dinner I provide the meal.
