Hi
just after some opinions / ideas.
DS1 3yrs - CMP allergy
DS2 - 7months (5.5 corrected)
due to DS1 CMP allergy, DS2 started on NAN 1HA under advice of DS1 gastro
while on NAN 1 HA - eczema, BAD craddle cap, feeding every 2 hours (tiny amount), poos black / green / yellow and contained mucas, about 3-4 soiled nappies a day, not sleeping much in day, constant mucasy snorting / breathing .... Was drinking about 600mls a day
So CMP symptoms considered, health nurse suggested change to Lactose Free ...
skin improved and craddle cap diminishing
total day sleeps 1 - 2 hours all up , drinking about 500mls a day, still frequently
poos worse with mucas after 2 weeks
Paed then put him on soy... first formed poo EVER! and skin improved even more... cradle cap almost gone... his mucasy breathing almost gone, started to sleep in day for about 3 hours ...lasted 1.5 weeks then he started to refusing it .... when his intake dropped to 350mls on average a day after 4 days ... paed changed to Pepti Junior
He happily drinks Pepti Junior.. and is drinking about 400 -500mls a day on av.
So about 10 days on Pepti Junior the mucasy nappies returned ... saw Health nurse who said to persevere until 6 weeks so all the other milk gets out of his system & his gut settles... I'm at about 3 weeks post pepti junior, and today I've had a nappy that was just mucas .... He is eating basic solids (bland vegies, rice cereal and pears, apples) and is now pooing about 4 -5 times a day
DS2 has been gaining weight, but not in last month though.
Health Nurse ok with the volume of the formula intake ... as baby food contains water.
His gradual health improvements with the removal of cows milk, supports a CMP intollerance ..
So my question is ... Pepti Junior is made from Cows Milk ... albeit highly modified, and recommended for Cows Milk / Soy Milk intollerance ... does anyone think that this mucas is indicative of an intollerance to Cows Milk or something else? Should I give it a bit longer or consider changing to an elemental formula ( ie Neocate) ?
thanks
L

PeptiJunior is cow's milk extensively hydrolysed. It is suitable for a majority of babies intolerant/allergic to cow's milk, but not all. Those whose immune systems are highly sensitive can still recognise the protein even in its broken down state and although they may show brief improvement, symptoms will return if PeptiJunior is continued.
In your position, I would be pushing for a Neocate script. Three weeks is plenty of time to show improvement. If mucous filled nappies are still occurring I would strongly suspect an intolerance to PeptiJunior.
Have you been referred to a paediatric allergist for testing?

My DD will poo green mucus 4-5 times a day with salicylate in her diet or mine. I definitely can't give her apple.

Thanks for your suggestion re neocate ...
the paed doesnt want him to see a paed allergist until about 14months old... he has had a possible reaction to banana also... (14 months as he was born premmie and he recommends testing at 12 months normally)
My DS1 has his next paed allergist appt in March, so planning to ask him some questions about DS2 then,
and meanwhile push the paed for an earlier referral ... I keep asking each visit, but he says that allergy testing under 1 can be inaccurate ... which is also what the paed allergist advised when I last saw him (when pregnant, I asked if he needed to test DS2 for the allergies that DS1 had)... none the less I will keep asking as I'd like to resolve all this guessing!
I'm seeing GP tomorrow,I'm hoping that he will ring the paed & they can decide on neocate ... may ask GP for allergy referral too!!
I am taking DS2 to see DS1's paed gastro on 1st April regarding DS2's reflux management ... he will no doubt have a theory on the mucas... I may actually try to get in to see him sooner than later (there is a 4 month wait but for babies they usually juggle a bit to get them seen sooner than later) ... as he is not breastfed and each day the number of soiled napppies since the reappearance of the mucas, is increasing ... today he had 7 soiled nappies today ... getting ridiculous

thanks for your info re apples
I really think its the milk as he started the mucas issue before starting on solids
I will monitor if apples make it worse though ... ironically the baby health nurse I saw last week told me not to give him apple as pears are easier on the gut and that apples are quite harsh
thanks both for your ideas!

quick update ....GP not sure about mucas, thinks may be mild gastro???
wants me to persevere with pepti junior 2 more weeks .. if still symptomatic then he will organise neocate as paed will be on hols
