Hi all original.gif
My name is cat... my DD just got diagnosed with gluten intolerence. DR also recommended DS go GF as she suspects he has it too from his symptoms.

Both kids were checked to CD but got negative results. (several times in DD's case)

Went to a new Dr who did a blood test that checks for all intolerences (so no need for elimination diets) and she was able to tell us that DD reacted really strongly to gluten. DD has had symptoms since she was 2 ( now 3.5). we were told she had reflux and already had lactose intol. now we have been told she doesn't have either of these!

We are slowly getting used to all the GF changes we have had to make. I was reading the previous chat thread about seperate toasters etc. does this apply to gluten intol as well?

I was wondering what you guys know about oats... the ones processed seperately to wheat... cost a fortune etc. we got some freedom foods ones from franklins. i read that as long as the oats are these ones that are processed seperately then it is ok to use them.

i've been baking up a storm... mostly successful.

a good friend of mine has CD and recommended me some products that are mainstream and just happen to be GF. The mission brand corn tortilas. aldi plain corn chips and some others. just wondering if there were any cheap options out there that you have found.
i noticed the woolies homebrand cornflakes only are 'may contain traces' so bought some of those. i wondered if maybe i shouldn't have though.

nice to meet you all original.gif

cat

catmeow82
i was also wondering if anything at maccas is safe? my friend says she eats chips and icecream with no problems!
Riotproof
Hi Cat, I can't answer most of your questions but most of the chains seem to have allergen information available on their websites..

http://mcdonalds.com.au/our-food/nutrition

Looking at it, it seems that the fries and the hashbrowns are gf. You'd just need to be sure that it's a store set up with a separate frie fryer. Apparently some smaller ones don't.
catmeow82
hey hey...
thanx for that! Poor DD... she rarely has maccas but when she does she loves her chips! since a lot of her fav foods when we are out are no longer any good it is good to know we can get something safe at maccas.
-*meh*-
Hi,

i believe that she should be ok with the same toaster as long as she doesnt show any effects from it. An intolerance is difference to coeliacs due to no internal damage being done.

maccas chips and hash browns are gluten free, however their ice cream is not. I think from memory their shakes are thou.

hj's icecream is gluten free from memory thou.
catmeow82
thanx original.gif

looks like we will have hungry jacks for icecream then! i will look into the shakes at maccas. we go to maccas very infrequently but DD does ask a lot so it would be a big adjustment to never go there!
brazen
yep, maccas icecream not gf.
rora eats (well, used to eat) the burger from the happy meal without a bun, the fries, and they also have friands, jaffa cake and cookies.

Noah has had the biopsy for celiac and its all confirmed that he has it, so hopefully now my 7 yr old (in 6 weeks) wil shoot up from his current 105cm tiny stature and 17kg weight!!

This is the one place I hoped never to be with all the other issues, but sadly Im here and I guess the sooner we get it sorted and get on with life the better.

I will need some help with his diet but the gastro said he will book and appointment etc with the dietetics ro something but he wants me to start him gluten free now! eeeek

However, ALL he currently eats is: (ASD - significant sensory issues)

cereals for breakfast - milo/cherrios/yoghurt/cocoa bombs and cocoa pops

Lunch - cereal as above or occasionally will eat 2 min noodles or sausage rolls/pies

Dinner - cereal as above or sausage rolls/pies/pancakes (with hidden mushrooms and zucchini and cheese)

So basically he lives on milk and cereal!! Which he cant have now except Cocoa Bombs (Lowan)

Any ideas on how I can make this transition suitable for him? Obviously its extremely importatn that he goes gluten free as he was born nearly 10 pound and should be a tall strong boy not the sz of a 4 yr old.

Im not sure how we are going to cope with just yoghurt and cocoa bombs 24/7! lol

Also all my boys will be tested, as it appears that at least two more will be likely diagnosed celiac as well, as they have all the classic symptoms and failure to thrive also.
(so nah nah nah stupid doctors that blamed me for my children being so small - it wasnt me at all!!!)
brazen
witha bit of luck you might find he broadens out what he eats once he starts feeling better *fingers crossed*

well, we had our first glutening in 18 months here today sad.gif rora was at vacation care and they had an excursion to a kids cooking class. they made pastry and apparently despite ryan and emelia both saying that rora needed gluten free someone decided the pastry they were making was indeed Gf and gave it to her (she knows to check but will believe what any adult tells her).

as soon as i got her home and in the shower i called the vac care people to let them know and make sure it doesn't happen again!
wallofdodo
The strawberry shakes are GF.

Whoops I thought the ice cream was, with the caramel topping, not the chocolate.
catmeow82
only the strawberry shakes? urgh! my least fav! hopefully DD likes them!

brazen - oh poor thing sad.gif DD got offered a biscuit about 50 times today at the kids program at church today. poor thing ended up in tears despite me bringing homemade yummy biscuits (that she had already finished)

macska - i bought my dd this cereal from woolies that has something about cookies in the name! it is just like milo cereal (which was her staple everyday cereal). my problem was DS loved weetbix... now he has mushy cornflakes. i'm going to try make some cornflake biscuits (the woolies own brand said 'may contain traces of gluten') so they are a cheap ok product. I've seen some recipes for GF pastry so u could make your own sausage rolls. the adjustment is the hardest. a friend of mine has just told me she remembers being extra hungry for several weeks after changing her diet. so maybe he will branch out with being hungry. we just went to all the supermarket and bought everything that DD wanted to try. lots of unhealthy biscuits etc! now i'm making my own and she seems happy enough.
wallofdodo
Damn it, yes Sundae, has traces.

The vanilla shake is GF as well.
catmeow82
oooh. vanilla is much better! we usually share so i'd have done strawberry if i had to!

since dd is intolerent traces should be ok? she only ever has a few licks...
ZombieMum
Oh no Brazen! Poor Rora! sad.gif I hope she isn't up all night due to it. Did she eat much of it? I hope she feels better tomorrow.

waves.gif macska.

Yes, hopefully he will improve his food choices. My DD1 (Aspergers) increased her food choices the first time she went gluten free. Unfortunately it's not been as easy for DD3 who is officially coeliac.

It's possible he is low in iron - so once that improves, his appetite/food choices might improve as well.

If you are struggling with what to feed him - Sustagen is gluten free. My DD3 has one drink each day, just so I know she is getting some good stuff into her. The supermarket Sustagen isn't as good as the one available in the pharmacy (which is Hospital Strength).
You may find he will hate some gluten free foods that he tries now, but once he adjusts, he might be willing to try those foods again.

Check all meds he is on, to make sure they are gluten free, as well as supplements.

There is a gluten free version of fruit loops.
There is two versions of cocoa pops - Lowan and IGA.
You won't be able to give him the Woolworths Corn Flakes as suggested by catmeow82 as it might contain traces, which is a no no for Coeliacs. There are gluten free cornflakes out there, as well as gf rice bubbles.

Patties do a gluten free pie and sausage roll - found in the freezer section of Coles.
I made some sausage rolls last night - it had been ages since I had made them. I used a recipe that has mashed potatoes which I posted on EB years ago. It didn't seem to have enough oil in it, so I kept adding to it. This recipe is kinda similar, so will try it in the future.
http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/23295/sausage+roll+pastry

I am thinking of starting up a blog with recipes (lol just following in Brazen's footsteps Tounge1.gif) - there are various pastry recipes out there, so I thought I would start with testing all the gf sausage roll recipes and then rate them on taste, and ease of making. Unfortunately gf means the pastry is crumbly and falls apart.
Last night's ones were a huge hit though, and I cheated and used the Coles gf sausages in the middle for the meat. ph34r.gif

My DH has used the FG Roberts Cottage bread mix to make a pie pastry, and it was delicious! That might be my next sausage roll attempt. I probably will end up sticking to that one. We LOVE the taste of the bread, it's the closest we have found to normal bread.
(http://www.lansellcottage.com.au/ scroll down the page to see the pie pastry details)
It also makes yummy pizza bases and focaccia. tthumbs.gif You can order it over the net, and he also sells the bread tins and decent yeast. You need to have a good digital scale, as best results are when it is weighed. I get the 5kg pack, which lasts a month in this place.

Will he have egg? I have been cooking boiled eggs for breakfast. Sometimes I will cook pancakes. We steer clear of the buckwheat pancake mixes because it doesn't agree with DD1. laughing2.gif

There are frozen hash browns that are gluten free.
Cat©
Thanks Zombiemum and all

Noah is already on the hospital strength sustagen, had him on that since they cut his supply of pediasure tetra packs sad.gif its all that keeps him from withering away! lol

I shall check out the variety onlne and perhaps take him for a shopping trip later in the week and let him choose some items to try...in his case even if he eats cereal and adds in corn chips that will be a bonus for now! lol

I shall source some recipies for the pastry (or buy some) and make my own pies and sausage rolls, I used to so should go back to it. I shall source some organic meat and mince it up myself to make sure its safe (even grain fed meat is gluten free isnt it? lol sounds silly but thought I should ask!)

We shall get some chooks back in the yard and that will save a lot on eggs again.

Milk is fine isnt it? What about chocolate milk or do they vary by brand? I shall have to learn all the things to look for that contain gluten but dont say that word......Im sure they cover a lot of ingredients with fancy words...like with the egg and nut situation, have to be careful there as they can phrase it in so many ways.

thanks again all!
ZombieMum
laughing2.gif yes animals that are feed grains are fine to eat. Tounge1.gif

I never even considered that until I came across that question on the net one day.

Under Australian laws, gluten and wheat must be declared. It isn't always with the ingredients - you may find that there is a warning somewhere on the packet, so when we try a new product, we look all over a couple of times, and sometimes check online to see if the manufacturers have a list.
It's important to always read the labels - ingredients can change.
You also need to be looking for barley, oats and rye. There are some frozen chips that have wheat or barley added to them!!!

Plain milk is fine, but flavoured may not be and some plain soy milks contain gluten.

Nesquik powder is gluten free.
http://www.nestle.com.au/OurProducts/Docum...t_April2011.pdf
D ick Smith has a drinking choclate powder that is gf.

If he has babychinos when out - the chocolate powder they sprinkle on top may not be gf.

Tacos and nachos were one thing my DD3 liked having - but not all corn chips or tacos are gf. We buy the Old El Paso taco kit. Doritos original corn chips are gluten free, (as are Smiths plain potato chips, but some plain chips may contain traces). Flavoured corn and potato chips are not gf, but some are specially marked as gf. (normally these are found in the health food section.)

Oh, and to help with the transition - it may help if your main meals are gf, so he doesn't feel left out and wish he could have the gluten foods.
At the start we had separate gf main meals for DD3 (eg pasta) - but she refused to eat it, so a lot of food got wasted. - these days it's much easier to do just gf spag bol - so that 1) it all gets eaten and no food is wasted. 2) less dishes are made. 3) if DD3 miraculously wants 2nds, then there is some more for her.

As long as your other kids are having 2-4 pieces of bread a day, they should be getting enough gluten in their diet for the testing. Plus, if some of their meals are gf now, they might find the transition easier.
Cat©
Sadly with just him theres no point going gluten free for his benefit as he wont eat what we eat anyway. Ill just stock up on gluten free cereal for now, and some gluten free fruit bread, along with those safe sausage rolls and lots of milk! lol As thats all he will eat anyway.

With any luck over time he may develop an appetite and want to try some "real" food, but by then all of them should have been tested, and if any more turn up coeliac then Ill swap us all to gluten free after the testing.

Ekk at the cost.....I jsut had a look and OMG if they whole family goes gluten free it will be a sh*te load more than we spend now ($400 a fortnight!!) for a family of 7.

You can claim gluten free foods on tax can you? roll2.gif
brazen
go for the blogging ZM!!!

yeah, luckily rora just vomited for an hour or so (mustn't have had much pastry) and slept on the way home then rested for an hour or so and then was full recovered and talked my ear off until her sister arrived home to talk to instead (thank god lol)

original.gif Help pretty please

I want to get some more vitamins as we are low but wanted to trial this new range on DS so emailed the company, this was the reply :

Kids Smart Vita-Gummies - all

Are Vita Gummies gluten free?
NO

Kids Smart Vita-Gummies - Multivitamin + Vegies

What type of gelatine is in this product?
Bovine (from cow) - animal fat

Kids Smart Vita-Gummies - Omega 3

What type of gelatine is in this product?
Porcine (from pig)

Kids Smart Vita-Gummies - Vitamin C

What type of gelatine is in this product?
Bovine (from cow) - animal fat

So my question is : if I give these to DS will it affect him greatly? I mean I know he has to go gluten free but with just the amount of possible gluten in these will that be too much for his system?

Thanks! Im so new to this so Im not sure if there is an ok time to allow tiny amounts of gluten or if it strictly HAS to be complete utter 0% gluten (I would never let him eat gluten containing food just thought that vitamins would be an exception - but then agian medicines arent are they?

brazen
does he have coeliac disease or gluten intolerance?

if CD my personal philosophy is that we don't chance the 'traces of'.
Cat©
He has biopsy diagnosed coeliac.....so I guess we treat it like his brothers anaphylaxis then...total avoidance and dont chance any?

What does it do when they have a little, can that straight away cause the ?villi in the lining to lay flat or shrivel or what ever it does....Ive done some reading, but so far everything is a bit murky that Im reading......it all just seems to treat it like an intolerance - but intolerance's dont usually cause significant failure to thrive and such an anemic looking child (*although in very severe cases it can make a child very ill).

its just so hard to get my head around it all. I want to do the right thing though! I really need to join coeliac society and get those books but I have to wait for the gastro appointment to get their official signature to join.
brazen
reactions seem to vary person by person but any amount can do damage, whether they have a reaction or not.

the dietitian that i see (who specialises in coeliacs) said that most products that have "may contain traces of" in the list would be ok, but to really read the ingredients and if anything looks more risky then to avoid it.

anything that actually specifically says it contains i wouldnt have, i make sure all of my medication is gluten free.
catmeow82
yeah... my understanding is for CD no traces at all... Intolerence all depends on the person but 'may contain traces' should be fine

all the people i know when CD are adults so they make their own choices. one friend knows within an hour or so of ingesting gluten... she takes more risks than other friends but rarely has a mishap. it is different with kids. we make the choices for them so we just have to do our best original.gif

since changing the kids diet for gluten intolerence 2 weeks ago we have seen massive changes. DD has changed. she is more vibrant and bubbly. she doesn't mope on the lounge and refuse to play outside. she has had much less complaints of a sore tummy. she has been eating us out of house and home! she was always so blah about food. now she just wants to try stuff and help more. we have had a few meltdowns over missing out but i have rectified those pretty fast by baking with her (today was missing out on icing covered arrowroot biscuits... we made GF madelines and iced them with GF icing and GF lollies)
DS is different too. no more bloated distended abdomen... poos are mostly normal. he was always a happy energetic bub but i can see a change.

thanx for all the tips. we are going along well generally. biggest challenge is people offering the kids food. we've been helping up at the kids program at our church and the other mums are finding it hard to remember! I've always had plenty of my own attractive treats in the pram... just got to keep that up!
it will be interesting to see how DD reacts to an accidental exposure now that she is so well. obviously i am doing my best to aviod it but accidents do happen. we like to eat out so my next challenge is to find some helpful thai/vietnamese/chinese/japanese places to eat.

oh...

are the kidsmart fish oil tablets GF?
Cat©
This is the rest of the email I got from them:

Kids Smart Natural Medicine CALM

Kids Smart Omega 3
Is it gluten free?

Kids Smart - Strawberry
Gluten free?

Kids Vit-C
What are the capsule shells made from?
Gelatin & potato starch

So we can stick to our usual ones, thankgoodness!

After we get all the boys tested, if we have one more with coeliac then we will all swap. I have been now for three weeks and everytime I have snuck bread my stomach is so sore and I have severe bowel issues within about 10mins. Not sure if mine is intolerance though, it may be.

I think Ethan will be for sure, he has the classic bowl tummy after eating just a teeny bit of gluten product. Joshua will most likely be as well as he is tiny for 13, and in his biopsy at 3 for reflux she noted that he has severe inflamation on his duodendum...but didnt do a coeliac test ever!

Kayne and Corbyn Im not sure about, both have massive bowel issues, but both are tall and one is significantly over weight and cant lose weight (like me!) packs it on even though he doesnt eat much.

Im just really p*ssed of that we get yet another bump in the road thrown at us, as if we didnt have enough to deal with already! rolleyes.gif

Hi everyone, its been a while since I've been in here but thought I'd add a little.

I know your talking about vitamins but just thought I'd mention to beware of nurofen. Its been a few years but there were 2 flavours. One was ok and one wasn't, sorry I can't remember which but I discovered it by checking the label.

Not sure if thats changed at all but I discovered it by reading the label and the chemist was surprised when I told him, he made a point of learning something new!

Can I ask - yes google should be my friend but its not at the moment.....is there a site where I can find all the different names for gluten, as in all the different ways to find it.....as obviously I have no clue, I thought it had to say wheat or some grain like Soy/Rye etc....

Hi everyone - because I stalk here I felt that I should add this as I think it's a very worthwhile things to know wink.gif

IGA sell a Pizza Base mix and it is absolutely delicious - it's an IGA badged product and it's a little brown looking but it tastes great. One packet made 2 pizzas - next time I will try maybe 2 pizzas and 2 littler ones for the kids to do their own as I like it a bit thinner. It doesn't have that GF taste IYKWIM!!! I know some of you make your own and I have a TMX but this was probably better than what I could do myself.

Hi Brazen, thats where I get confused though.

Like the vitamins above, the company say they are not gluten free, which is ok, we wont use them, but on the ingredients I saw nothing that indicated wheat/rye or oats! lol Also nothing that says gluten is in it.

So how do we *really* tell if it says that there is no wheat/rye/barely/oats and gives no indication of gluten either way.

Ive been buying only stuff that says gluten free, but obviously thats the exxy way to go as I am sure there are a heap out there that are naturally gluten free and they just dont say it.

try to up the protein and fibre if you can cecily.

Hi all,
I'm new here.
We've just returned from the paediatrician who thinks DD (2yr, 8 mo) has coeliac disease. Some of her blood results were off the charts and she has iron deficiency anaemia which is why we consulted the paed in the first place. She has a referral to a paediatric gastroenterologist and for a gastroscopy and biopsy in a month's time. The paediatrician said to not change her diet before the gastroscopy so as to not influence the results.

I'm just after the most basic, idiot's guide to dealing with coeliac in a toddler.

Our own diet is heavy with pastas and breads. DD loves pasta, sandwiches with grainy breads and weet bix in particular.

What advice would you give a complete novice?

To make things even harder, I'm vegetarian and DD hardly eats meat. She flat out refuses to eat it even though DP eats meat.
brazen
i'd wait to see how you go with the results of the biopsy, but there are breads available, some are nicer than others. we still cook pasta heaps, just make 2 kinds. and rora loved corn thins for a long while after diagnosis!

good luck original.gif
