My DD 4 writes many of her letters backwards and I will give an example.


I will show her how to write a capital L with my pen starting at the top going down and then from left to right. She will put her pen on the paper go from right to left and then up. A simple capital I start at the top and then go down, while she will start at the bottom and go up. An e I will start about half way up draw a straight line from left to right and then do the circle around that, she will start right at the bottom draw the circle and the finish with the line. The letters look right at the end and I suppose this is not a worry but was wondering if others have seen this and she has been doing it for almost a year.

It's probably not a problem at the moment, but she will have to re-learn when she does cursive writing. It might be worth spending a little time teaching her where to start, maybe through numbered join the dots. That way she'll be in the habit of writing letter in a way that will make cursive flow easily.

Its completely normal and age appropriate.

DD1 currently writes a lower case e the same as your DD.

She'll learn the correct way to write this year in Prep.

Totally normal..alot of kids go through that stage

My DS also does this but, being left handed he also writes them from right to left. He is now doing a lot of writing in prep and still doing it wrong. I got him a 'write and wipe' exercise book that has all the letters with arrows to show the directions, but he ignores the arrows. Someone told me about an iphone ap that gets them tracing the letters properly on the screen....you could look into that I suppose.
