I am considering switching to cloth, DS is in disposables at the moment.

I have seen some nappies on ebay "my little ripple", they are cheap and have good reviews overall.

I was just wondering if anyone here had used them and what you thought?

Also, I'm a bit confused about MCNs. A friend mentioned that you can just take out the insert from the back of the nappy and put another one in instead of changing the whole nappy. Is this what others do? I would have thought there would have been urine on the actual nappy between the fleece and the nappy? Confused!

Can I use normal nappy rash cream if I use flushable liners as well as microfleece? I have heard it can stain? DS has just had a bad nappy rash and I'm worried about it coming back if we can't use creams. I know there are other creams that can be used with cloth but I would prefer to stick to using bepanthen as this seems to have kept it away. Does anyone else do this?

How do I go about washing them? Can I leave them in a bucket and wash every second day or will they stink?

I wouldn't use Bapanthen and microfleece even with a flushable liner. Although technically it should be okay that stuff is sticky and liners can shift. I'm using the Grovia magic stick and it's great. There are a few others that are safe to use too. I also use disposables at night. My son doesn't get nappy rash generally but my daughter got it a lot so I used Sudocrem at night with the disposable and nothing (or something safe when needed) during the day.

I reuse covers and prefolds without washing the covers till the end of the day (alternating so they have time to air between changes) but not pockets that get weed on directly. These go straight in the bucket. If you google a few different styles and examine the pictures you'll see the difference between those that can be aired and washed at the end of the day and those that can't be reused at all without washing.

Washing every second day is fine. I've found myself washing every third day without a problem. I haven't noticed a smell. I have an airtight bucket and I wipe it with eucalyptus oil on a paper towel after washing it and then leave the paper towel in the bottom so it always smells fresh.

I have some My Little Ripples. They are fine, but nowhere as good as my Baby Beehinds. One of my My Little Ripples broke after I had used it a few times. They refused to replace it. The Office of Fair Trading informed them they were legally required to replace it - they still refused. Be aware that you're likely to get no joy from them if something goes wrong.



I don't do it this way. You'd get urine all over your hand.



DD's skin is so much better with MCNs that you might find you don't need to use as much nappy cream. We don't use nappy cream with MCNs.



I wash mine every second day with 1/2 cap full of Earth Choice concentrate and line dry. I wash every second day and don't have smell problems. If the weather's hot I sprinkle a bit of Rockin Green powder over the top nappy in the bucket and that fixes and smell that comes.


I love my MCNs. There's hardly any extra work involved and they're so much nicer against DD's skin.

My little ripple are trash. The only MCN's I ever regretted spending the money on. They fall apart in the wash, the elastic disintegrates and the PUL separates from the outer. For ebay brands look at Papoose, Babyland, Coolababy or Rainbow BB. Papoose also has a dedicated perth based web store and is my favourite China Cheapie brand.

What your friend said you can do is for a different style of MCN, that's a snap in All in two. With those the insert snaps into the cover and each time you change the insert the child has a fresh layer against the skin. Most of the ebay ones are pockets where you do need to change the entire thing. Just changing the insert in a pocket will lead to rashes.
Bepanthan is a BIG no no cream, causes build up something shocking (yes I have tried it!). Curash and Desitin are the same. I've had no issues with a THIN layer of sudocrem, but again it does cause problems if applied too thickly. Sudocrem or chamomile wipes solution and silk liners are the ONLY rash treatment that works on my daughters horrible skin. I can't put disposables on her, she's got blisters within five minutes of a disposable going on.

I wash mine daily but that's because my daughter generates a full load of nappies every day (has to be changed as soon as slightly damp or she will rash up). My son was such an easy child that I could was every second day. I could actually stretch it out to a week between washes with him. As long as you dry pail (don't soak) in a non airtight container they don't stink, even in feral high humidity 40º Queensland heat!
I use either Aldi's Laundrite detergent or the Earth Choice non concentrate. They are the ONLY detergents I have tried that my daughter doesn't react to. She reacts to the Earth Choice concentrate one. 20ml of detergent in my front loader machine with an express wash followed by intensive with post rinse.

I don't use China Cheapies (as they are nicknamed), but in response to your other queries:

- with the all-in-two's (AI2) you can change the inner and not the outer but TBH it's a PITA. The value to me of an AI2 is that they dry faster. Often too the outside can get icky and it's just not worth the hassle
- I wash every 2 days, although I have stretched out to 3 on occasion when I've been feeling lazy. Just dry pail and once your bub is on solids just give your nappies a bit of a scrub / rinse before you pop in the machine, or as you pail them.
- Sun works wonders, the more you get the cleaner your nappies will be

DD has only had a very mild nappy rash 1 or 2 days and I've been using cloth for 9 months now. I'm not an expert on what creams you can use, but cornstarch is great and doesn't impact nappies at all. You can buy in the baby aisle or I think just use plain cornflour - I think it's the same.
