I'm really having trouble finding my son (who is 10) a quilt cover that is not too babyish and isnt covered in licensed characters like Spiderman.
I've found lots of gorgeous quilts but most are a little young for him I think.
So, I'm wondering if there are any sewers out there who are experienced in making quilt covers who might be interested in sewing one up for me.
Specs are as follows:
- Single bed size
- Button / buttonhole closure at the end you put the quilt in
- Matching pillow case and possibly even 1 or 2 square throw cushions
So that I can work out whether it is going to be feasible dollar wise, if anyone is interested could you please let me know how much you would charge to make:
a) the quilt and pillow case by itself, and then
b) the extra cost for 2 extra cushions (not pillows) that I can use a cushion insert in
c) how long it would take to make it
I would provide the fabric and buttons (yet to find both).

A doona cover is easy enough to make and could be done in a day. The difficulty lies in finding fabric. Your choice of fabric will be limited to those that are 140cm (or more) wide. Most of the fabric at Spotlight is either 120cm or 90cm wide. They do sell some sheeting fabric in the decorator section that is wide enough, so you might like to take a look there. Here is some online green dots which is very wide, but not wide enough (at 240cm) to double over to make a doona cover, so you would still need at least 3 metres just for the doona, which would be $66!

You could get away with buying a flat sheet to use as the underside (I have bought them for $10 on clearance at Target for example) and just buying something nice for the top layer.

Can you sew at all? If you have access to a sewing machine and any previous sewing ability, you could DIY! Buttonholes are tricky, but TBH I wouldn't do buttonholes as I have a snap press. If you know anyone who makes their own MCN and uses a snap press, they could put snaps on for you.

Alternatively, have you looked at esprit doona covers? They have some really nice striped ones that are not babyish.

Some were very nice but not exactly what I had in mind (yes I am fussy!!)

I'd be happy to give it a go for you, but as pp mentioned, you might have an issue finding a fabric wider than 112cm that you like (as there's not a lot of choice in 140cmish).

Charging for the quilt cover and pillow case? I'd expect to pay about $30 (with your providing the fabrics of course) and an extra $20 for the cushions and it would take me about a week
