Hello

First time Home Improvers here!

Just wanting to know peoples opinions.

Which do you do first, rip up old flooring (carpets and tiles) and do the wood flooring? or Paint the walls first?

I am not sure, as I believe we will have to remove all our skirting boards in order to lay the wooden flooring. So is it best to remove skirting, patch plaster work, then paint and then do floors?

Any experienced info would help!

Thanks,
Stellajoy
Paint then floors. if you are getting rid of the carpet you don't even have to put drop sheets down.

take off the skirting before painting.

That's the order I would do it in - minimise the chance of having to redo something because something further down the line damaged it.

I've never renovated, but this would make sense to me. Pull the skirting boards off, patch and paint, do the floors and then replace the skirting boards (painted if possible). That way you're not damaging the floor when you're painting.

When we renovated our place, the tradies had a barney over which order to do things.

The painters wanted the floors done first and the floor man wanted the floors done last.

What we decided to do was have the floors done first because they required sanding which was a very messy and dirty job. There's fine dust that went everywhere and would have coated the walls.

Our painters were very neat and tidy. They cleaned the walls as part of their surface prep, were careful with drop sheets etc so we finished with lovely polished floors, freshly painted walls and no cleaning required from me biggrin.gif That's a win in my books LOL.

there was no barney at our place.

the floors went down first. were sanded and polished etc.

then we painted everything.

Hi OP depends on the type of flooring, as in proper floorboards that need to be sanded and polished, or floating floor.

My IL's flip houses and they tend to paint first as they will normally replace carpets, one time my MIL didn't care too much about the paint and then they later choose to not replace the carpet so she had to go around fixing all the paint the out of the carpet.

Ripping up the tiles will cause ALOT of dust as well.

I recently did this but I did patching everything first, then painted the ceilings then walls, doors and windows, then ripped up old carpet and did the floor boards, did a little more minor touch up patching on skirting and then painted it . I polished the original hardwood floors though so no need to remove the skirting

(I would try and avoid removing skirting if you can avoid it- depending on how old it is, what type, and what the walls are made of, it can do a lot of damage removing it and can be hard to replace it if gets ruined)

Our builder said usually the painting is done first & then the floors. But due to timing issues we got the floors done first & then the painting. No big deal, the painters covered the floors in drop sheets & they were very careful. No problems resulted.
