Thinking about it

Not sure if this is the right area to be posting this in but my son is 5.5 months old and we have shared a lovely exclusively breastfeeding relationship, totally breastfed, no bottles. Coming up to 6 month mark and I know it will come time soon for him to start solids. I feel a bit sad as I have really enjoyed exclusively feeding him and knowing that I have been able to sustain him and help him through so many major growth spurts and developments he has already undergone. I know that I will continue to feed him and that food will supplement this but eventually he will be weaned and this makes me feel sad. That's all I wanted to say.

I felt exactly the same OP. I was actually really upset with the idea of having to start solids as silly as that sounds.
Well done for exclusively feeding him till now

I felt sad about it, I introduced solids the day dd turned 6 months and she took to it with gusto, but it was the end of exclusive bfing and that's a big thing for some of us.
The babies don't seem to give a toss though

.
Hopefully the sad feeling will lessen and you will continue to feel proud of what you have both achieved. It's bittersweet.
All the best.

I was a bit sad too.
But now you get to introduce him to the magical world of food - all the colours, tastes and textures. It's so fun watching their face as they try something new, and being able to give little tastes as you cook with bub watching from a highchair in the kitchen. You've given your son the best start with breastmilk, now you get to set him up for life by helping develop his palate for healthy, wholesome food.

Thanks guys.... still feeling some trepidation and sadness at giving it up but as you say there is a brave new world of solids out there to be started. So today I gave the little boy a suck on some pasta (no sauce) just a piece of penne. He seemed a little interested then pushed it away. I felt a little excitement as it's the beginning of a new chapter for us. I guess I sort of miss my little newborn!

OP this is how I've been feeling! Only I couldn't articulate it
My ds (5.5 months) is showing a lot of interest in what I'm eating, but at this point is still pushing food out of his mouth, so it looks like we have a little longer before food is a regular part of his diet.
Congrats on BF and good luck with introducing your DS to the world of food

Thanks guys, I had aimed to breastfeed exclusively for the 6 months recommended by WHO and feel very proud of having reached it (as of next week). It is a new avenue to explore with the little boy so I am in a way looking forward to it.
Buffygirl - I have been feeling a little funny about the whole thing and it's funny noone else I have spoken to seems to feel the same way. They seem so eager to move on and reach the next milestone whereas I want to keep my little boy close to me as he is. I guess we're all different...

OP I know how you feel. My 15-month-old weaned recently and, well, BFing is just an emotional thing, because it's so intimate.
Well done on getting so far. Have the video camera handy for when he has his first tastes of different foods.
