Dad's watertight contract for kids before family can get a dog

A father's very funny "Family Dog Contract", which he drew up for his kids before letting them have a puppy, is going viral.

Redditor rjohnstone13, shared the post entitled, "Dog Contract by Reluctant Dad," to Reddit.

"We can get a dog if everyone agrees to the following terms," dad wrote atop a list of thirteen very detailed points.

"Dad never has to pick up dog poop. Ever," he writes." The dog's poop is picked up at least 3x per week by children to Dad's satisfaction."

In addition, the contract notes that the dog must be small, must not shed (at all) slobber or have a runny nose. Dad waives all dog-bathing responsibilities and notes that he has unrestricted veto power over the dog's name.

At point eleven, dad also makes it clear that the canine should never be referred to as a child or sibling. "All parties agree that the dog is a dog," he writes.

There's even a stipulation about the dog's inclusion in the family Christmas card. Specifically, he or she is not to appear by name. The Christmas conditions don't stop there, however.

"If there is a picture of the dog on the family Christmas card, it shall be merely incidental – i.e., the dog will not be the primary subject of a photo," Dad adds.

Reluctant Dad's concluding remarks are crystal clear. "All parties agree that the dog is primarily the kids' responsibly for it's entire life."

The father-of-four's contract received plenty of laughs and support on Reddit, many relating to his experience. "Story of a Dad's life," wrote one commenter. It also had its detractors however, some believing the father was being too harsh - and perhaps a tad unrealistic - with some of his expectations. Many however, predicted a happy ending – suggesting that the dad would probably end up loving the new addition most of all.

And, as it turns out, they might be right.

In an "epilogue" to the post, the dad shared the news that two weeks after the contract was signed, the kids were granted their wish.

And he's absolutely gorgeous.

"We got a ~three year old white fluffy mutt from a shelter that weighs 15 lbs., was already house-trained and doesn't shed or drool," he wrote.

"We named him Kershaw (veto power not exercised)… Everyone (including Dad) adores the dog, which has been a fantastic addition to (though not member of) our family."

We think he'll probably make it into the family Christmas card - front and centre - after all.

Have you tried something similar with your kids?
