Your family's first pet is a big, exciting decision.

Whatever pet you decide on, choosing the perfect name can be tricky .

While certain rules tend to apply to naming humans, it's a free-for-all when it comes to naming a pet and nothing is off limits.

A list of the top cat and dog names in 2015, compiled by Medibank Pet Insurance, revealed the most popular names in Australia.

Top ten names for dog

  7. Buddy
  8. Oscar

  10. Toby

Top ten names for cats

  1. Bella
  2. Charlie
  3. Oscar
  4. Max
  5. Molly
  6. Coco
  7. Missy
  8. Mia
  9. Tiger
  10. Jasper

In the United States, Pet Insurance saw a similar trend with Bella and Max taking first and second spot for both cats and dogs. The pet insurance company went one step further to create a list of the most popular 'wacky' dog and cat names.
