Sending the kids out to the corner store for a Bubble O' Bill and a Paddle Pop is a thing of the past. With our new love for artisan ice cream and genuine gelato, going out for ice cream is a completely different affair. It's not just a treat for the littlies, but now more of an experience. We've listed a few exceptionally 'cool' places to check out and the interesting flavours every Aussie kid (and adult) should try out.

Adelaide

With locally sourced fresh milk and cream, St Louis House of Fine Ice Cream & Dessert serves up delicious and unique ice cream flavour combinations. Their 'Peanut and Nutella' ice cream will be a hit with the kids, while adults can enjoy their new 'Strawberry, Basil and Lime' sorbet.

With a new artisan flavour introduced every month, you have to try out Gelato Bello when in Adelaide. With flavours such as 'Caramelised Fig and Roasted Almond' gelato, 'Sticky Date' gelato and February's 'Salted Chocolate with Balsamic Raspberry' gelato, how can you resist?

Brisbane

Ice cream and entertainment is what you get at Nitrogenie in Brisbane. The kids can just pick a flavour and have the ice cream made right before their very eyes! With plenty of flavours to pick from such as 'Condensed Milk and Milo' or 'Peanut Butter and Jam Donut', the crew will turn your fresh ingredients into ice cream using liquid nitrogen.

Prefer some gelato made by Italian experts? You and the littlies are welcome to watch the gelato making process in the 'Laboratorio Del Gelato' (Gelato Laboratory) at La Macelleria. Experience unique flavours such as 'Mandorlino' (almond, hazelnut, amaretto and caramelised almonds), and 'Cassata Siciliana' (a ricotta gelato scattered with candied fruit).

Sydney

For a frozen taste that's very different to your normal ice cream and gelato, get the kids to try out Turkish ice cream. Often described as ice cream that's 'stretchy' and like melted marshmallows, Hakiki Turkish Ice Cream & Baklava offers exotic flavours such as 'Grape Molasses and Tahini' or 'White Chocolate and Mediterranean Fig'.

Instead of Turkish ice cream head over to  Pagoto Gelato & Waffle House where you and the kids can taste over 15 authentic Greek ice creams including 'Watermelon and Feta' and 'Affogato Tsoureki' flavours.

Featuring many original creations such as 'Burnt Orange Marmalade' and 'Lemon and Mascarpone', Bellingen Gelato also caters for the traditional ice cream lovers, or the littlies that still prefer good old fashioned flavours such as 'Peppermint Choc-Chip', 'Rum and Raisin' and of course, the classic 'Chocolate'.

Perth

The award winning and 30-year-old Junction Icecreamery in Perth, offers a range of ice creams no child or adult can resist. While the kids can enjoy flavours such as 'Smartie Surprise', 'Bubblegum' and 'Caramel Twist', the more discerning grownup can feast on 'Ginger and Dark Chocolate', 'Double Espresso' and 'Tiramisu'. The Junction Icecreamery also offers a range of soy ice creams including 'Honey Macadamia' and Passionfruit'.

As well as standard sorbets and gelato (definitely try the 'Argentinian Salted Caramel' and 'Choc Chip Cookie Dough'), Il Gelato in Perth also have a Semi-Freddo Dessert range with flavours that include 'Crunchy Nut Pistachio' and 'Ferrero'.

Gusto Gelato is worth a visit just to read over the creative names given to the specialty gelato. With names like 'Cookie Monster', 'Chief Wiggum' and '3 Bears', the kids will love picking out their flavours. Adults on the other hand can dwell over flavours such as 'Brittle Sweet Symphony' (honey gelato with almond brittle and dark chocolate) and 'Booze & Moo's' (Coffee and Kahlua gelato with chunks of triple chocolate cookies).

Melbourne

With the owner trained at the Carpigiani Gelato University (I know, I was as surprised as you are at the existence of a gelato university), Pidapipo Gelateria not only offers supreme gelato flavours but they also deliver the ultimate child 'heaven' – liquid Nutella that pours from a tap!

Melbournian kids can also enjoy the liquid nitrogen ice cream freezing process at Dex2rose.  Even more appealing to the teens or adults is their 'Frank Sriracha' flavour – Sriracha hot sauce gelato with added candied bacon! Not appealing? There's always 'Not Your Granny's Apple Pie'….
