The Olympic swimming gold medallist and the Balinese princess were married two months shy of a decade.
After months of speculation, Olympic swimming gold medallist Michael Klim and wife Lindy have announced their separation.
The Polish-born Australian sportsman and the Balinese princess, who were married two months shy of a decade, have three children together – two daughters, Stella, 10, and Frankie, three, and son, Rocco, seven.
On Thursday, their management issued a statement regarding their marriage split, saying their children are their main focus.
"It is with much respect for each other that Michael and Lindy Klim have agreed to formally separate, believing that this decision is best for their family," a spokesperson said.
"Michael and Lindy's children will always remain their highest priority, and their happiness will be Michael and Lindy's primary focus."
The last time the pair attended a public engagement was at a Royal Croquet event in Melbourne on December 11, amid speculation that their marriage was on the rocks.
While their children attend an international school in Bali, the pair share an unusual living arrangement, splitting their time between Bali and Melbourne, where Michael is based to run their Milk & Co natural skincare range.
"Initially it wasn't really about the business, the objective for us was to set up the family there for a short period of time. With [my wife] Lindy's Balinese background we wanted to expose the kids to a Balinese upbringing," he told Fairfax Media in January.
"It requires a fair bit of commuting but ultimately for me it creates a really good work-life balance," Michael said.
He said that the family use technology to stay in touch wherever they are based and he splits his time between the two countries, spending about two-to-three weeks at a time in each place.
"It's a lot of logistical organisation but it's doable," he added.
Michael was in Bali with the family for the split announcement, taking time to enjoy the surf on Thursday.
The writing had been on the wall for some time as both avid social media users had been posting plenty of family pictures on their respective Instagram accounts, but notably leaving each other out.
The last time Lindy, 37, shared a picture of her sportsman-turned entrepreneur husband was in August last year, while Michael, 38, has not shared a picture of his now ex-wife since September.
They had also stopped wearing their wedding rings.
Trying to put the rumours to bed, Klim told OK! Magazine in January, saying that the high-profile socialites were still an item.
"We're just like everyone ... it's just a typical marriage," she said at the time, adding: "We're still together, we're just trying to work things out."
Way back when
The pair met on the Myer catwalk while modelling for Spring Racing in 2005. Wearing an Alex Perry designed wedding dress and with Michael dressed as the groom, they hit it off instantly.
They were married 12 months later, with their first daughter Stella in tow.
It is not known if they will continue to work together on their skincare range, with Lindy acting as the creative director. Milk & Co now employs 12 staff and turns over more than $5 million a year, with its products stocked in 13 countries around the world.
A spokesperson for the Klims told Fairfax Media on Friday that they would not be making any further comment.
