Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, will release a children's picture book on inspirational American women titled She Persisted.

The book will share the stories of 13 historical women who relentlessly pursued their goals in the face of opposition, including Harriet Tubman, Nellie Bly, Maria Tallchief and Oprah Winfrey.

Illustrated by Alexandra Boiger, She Persisted will reach bookstores on May 30, and will feature a cameo that is yet to be announced.

"I wrote this book for everyone who's ever wanted to speak up but has been told to quiet down, for everyone who's ever been made to feel less than," Chelsea Clinton said in a statement.

The name of the book echoes a statement made by Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, last month after Republican senators voted to formally silence Senator Elizabeth Warren, as she was reading a 1986 letter from Coretta Scott King criticising Senator Jeff Sessions' civil rights record.

"She was warned," McConnell said of Warren following the confrontation, which took place on the eve of the vote to confirm Sessions as attorney general. "She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted."

The episode immediately sparked uproar among women on social media who empathised with Warren, leading to the trending hashtags #LetLizSpeak and #ShePersisted.

Chelsea Clinton's previous books include It's Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going! and the more recent Governing Global Health: Who Runs the World and Why?, written with Devi Sridhar.
