Mum-shaming seems to have become a global sport, with celebrity parents most particularly in the firing line with their millions of followers. But among those followers are also those prepared to clap back at mum-shaming comments.
A critic who took issue with Tori Spelling's eight-year-old daughter's purple hair found themselves with shade aimed squarely back at them this week, as fans came to her defence.
Tori Spelling has been around the parenting block five times with husband Dean McDermott. They share children Liam, 12, Stella, 11, Hattie, eight, Finn, seven and Beau, two.
The couple took their five children to a pumpkin patch, a Halloween tradition celebrated widely in the US, and Tori posted a happy snap.
She captioned it, "Our yearly tradition... a family outing to the local pumpkin patch ... Loved the pumpkins, bouncy castle, slides, and family fun!" before asking fans where their favourite pumpkin patch is.
In the photo, Hattie sports a striking head of purple hair, clearly having amped up her love of the bold colour after experimenting with streaks earlier in the month.
"Why would you let your daughter have red hair?" a disapproving commenter wrote. "Parenting gone wrong."
"I would NEVER dye my kids' hair at all at a young age," she added after Spelling's fans called her out. "When they get older and CAN make their OWN decisions then they can do whatever they want."
"A child that young shouldn't have their hair coloured at all," she continued." They should embrace their beauty and naturalness."
She didn't stop there, adding, "I don't think that child should have her hair like that. She should embrace her natural beauty."
Fans soon came to the mum's defence.
"I just dyed my 9-year-old daughter's hair purple. I guess I'm a terrible parent," one fan wrote.
"Not your kid, not your business, shut it," added another bluntly.
Tori isn't new to this kind of criticism. Earlier in the month the "Beverly Hills, 90210" star said "screw the shamers" when Hattie's pink hair was criticised.
And last month a photo of her children oin their first day back at school after the summer holidays brought out the trolls who commented negatively on their appearance.
Tori wasn't going to let that one go either, and she was all class in her response.
"For all the individuals on here that felt the need to #momshame and #kidshame me and my children I say 'Shame on you!' I was raised to believe that if you can't say anything nice about someone then don't say anything at all."
In a post on October 11, Tori praised her 'beautiful, unique, free-spirited, fiery, strong-willed artistic, indigo child' Hattie, on her eighth birthday, clearly proud that her daughter marches to the beat of her own drum.
She wrote, "... this is the age of listening and truly tapping into our children. Each one is different and can handle different things at all different ages. Be open with boundaries!"
The star added that Hattie had been a teacher to her in her parenting journey.
"If you truly listen with an open heart and mind they will help you guide them to their truest and fullest potential (Hattie has taught me that!)."
