Forget the fake ID. Teens in the US have discovered there's a much easier way to buy booze amid the coronavirus pandemic - pop on a mask and dress like your grandma.
In the latest trend to hit Tik Tok, teenagers are posting their successful attempts to purchase alcohol, noting that it's harder to determine your age when your face is half-covered. The clips are attracting millions of views.
"For legal reasons this is my actual grandma" writes Angelina, clad in a headscarf, contraband wine in hand.
Meanwhile, Nikki took her handbag holding "granny" to the shops to buy Vodka. "Oh, my God, it worked!" she says. "It's too good, guys."
"Granny be looking a little different here," wrote these girls, whose commitment to the cause is really second to none.
"PSA: use ur fakes as much as possible bc if you wear a mask they can't see ur whole face lol," one teen wrote.
It's certainly given social media a chuckle ...

I think they may have underestimated how big the gap is between "looking older" and "looking like you're on the way to the cast party for your school's production of Our Town."— Vaughn Winchell (@VaughnWinchell) July 15, 2020
I LOVE this generation. I don’t care what y’all say. I love these kids.— GillyBeans (@GFPorter44) July 15, 2020
Of course, as with any trend that attracts millions of social media views, the secret is now out. So any teens planning to put their best granny disguise to the test might find themselves being asked for ID regardless of their wrinkly appearance.
It might also be a good idea for real life grandmas to have their pension cards on hand if they are hoping to purchase a bottle of wine or two. They just might find themselves being asked to prove their age for the first time in many, many years.
