Greek meatballs and tzatziki

Greek meatballs and tzatziki

These meatballs perfectly capture all the flavours of a traditional Greek lamb roast. The lemon, herbs and garlic marry so well with homemade tzatziki. Serve these at your next party. Great warm or at room temperature.

  • 1kg lamb mince
  • 1 clove garlic, grated or finely minced
  • zest from 1 lemon
  • 2 tsp sea salt flakes (or 1 tsp table salt)
  • 2 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbs chopped fresh oregano (or 1 tsp dried oregano)
  • 200g greek feta cheese, crumbled
  • Tzatziki
  • 3 rounded tablespoons thick Greek yoghurt
  • 1 medium cucumber, grated and juices squeezed out
  • 1 tablespoon chopped mint
  • 2 tsp good olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste


Place the lamb mince, garlic, lemon zest, salt, pepper, cinnamon and oregano into a mixing bowl. Using your hands, squish together and thoroughly mix the ingredients together. Add the feta cheese and mix together again, but be careful to leave the feta cheese rather chunky, so don't over mix at this stage.

You can either bake or panfry the meatballs for equally good results. To bake, preheat an oven to 220°C and line a shallow baking tray with baking paper. Take tablespoons of the mixture and roll into a ball between your hands and place onto the tray. Continue until all the mixture is used up.

Bake for 15 minutes, turn over and finish them off for another 10 minutes. To panfry, you’ll get best results from a non-stick pan. Drizzle just a little olive oil into the pan and fry meatballs in batches, not overcrowding and turning frequently to get an even brown all over.

Whilst the meatballs are cooking, prepare the tzatziki. Combine the yoghurt, squeezed out cucumber shreds, mint, olive oil, salt and pepper.

Serve the meatballs alongside the tzatziki, with an extra squeeze of lemon juice just before eating.
