It's the adults-only advent calendar that came close to causing riots last year, when Australians learned that local Aldi stores would not receive the Aldi wine advent calendars bestowed upon our UK counterparts.
In a completely unacceptable move last year Aldi somehow decided not to stock Australian stores with its much-lauded advent calendar, complete with 24 mini-bottles of its best red, white, rosé and sparkling wines.
We heard the collective wails of millions, as hearts dropped to feet and we got on with the business of an Aussie Christmas, sans advent calendars of our very own.
This year, the news has broken that both UK and US Aldi stores will be stocking not only the wine advent, but also a cheese advent calendar, from November 7. In the US, the wine calendar will retail for $69.99 and the cheese calendar will be $12.99.
Promising "24 imported festive mini cheeses" on the front of the box is like a moth to the flame. We need no further encouragement to go forth and buy.
Aldi, we are here for this, and we speak for the people of Australia when we say you must bring both the wine and cheese advent calendars to Australia.
We received a rather non-comittal reply, when asked for a formal response about whether Aussie stores would be receiving the calendars this year.
An Aldi Australia spokesperson stated cryptically, "ALDI have an array of exciting and unique Special Buys coming into stores in the lead up to Christmas this year that are perfect for gifting and celebrating. More information around these products will be released as the festive season draws closer."
We're electing to be optimistic about this response. In October last year an Aldi spokesperson told us that Australian stores would definitely not be getting the calendars, so the fact that they've been vague this year is a good sign - even if it is only August.
Aldi, please take note! Surely you don't want to be responsible for ruining so many Christmases?
Here's hoping it'll be chin-chin all December long.
